What am I?

Alta is both amazed and shocked by the forest she is in. All around her are trees as someone would expect from a forest but those trees are abnormally tall.

Each tree is slightly over 300 meters tall. The tallest tree back on earth is only 115.7 meters. Not only are the trees abnormal but the flowers she saw look like they came straight out of a fantasy novel.

One of them even produced a mysterious red aura.

Alta only had one word to describe this oasis.

'Beautiful...'

[Indeed.]

The mechanical male voice startled Alta. She got so surprised by it that she jumped 4 meters in the air resulting in her hitting her head on a branch.

To her surprise, there is no pain but the embarrassment caused by her unnatural feat made her face heat up. She began to look around to find the source of that voice even though she subconsciously knew where it came from.

[I am sorry for startling you.] The voice once again startled her as it spoke in her mind. Alta felt uncomfortable having someone inside her head.

'Who the hell said that!?'

As if sensing her thoughts, the voice responded. [You may call me system or whatever you feel comfortable with. My job is to guide you to help you become a powerful being.]

'That's extremely vague!' As someone who read many fantasy novels, Alta isn't new to the whole system thing. The system's introduction was a bit lackluster in her opinion.

[I shall explain in a bit more detail. In this world, there are abilities called skills. The amount of skills one has differentiates the powerful from the weak. Almost anyone can gain a skill but most people don't have more than 5 skills and in rare cases, some aren't able to get even 1. That is because gaining a skill depends on someone's innate talents which is why many people are unable to learn more than a single skill their whole life.]

[I can completely remove the talent factor so that you can learn any skill as long as you put in enough effort.]

The system's second attempt at an explanation was very helpful. Alta didn't know how to feel after learning this. With the help of the system, she could become powerful, so powerful that no one could ever make her feel the way Joshua made her feel.

The system didn't have to tell her for her to know that this world is extraordinary she could feel a sort of energy that is everywhere around her. She guessed that it was mana, magical energy that would often appear in fantasy worlds.

[That is correct.] The system was quick to confirm her guess.

"So how..." As Alta was going to ask a question she cut herself off, she noticed that her voice was a lot deeper than she remembered. When she was about to touch her throat she screamed in shock.

Her hands are purple and have incredibly sharp black nails. Not only are her hands purple but the rest of her body is as well. She started to touch her face and realized that she has 2 more eyes than a human is supposed to have.

An unholy screech came out of her mouth as she continued examining her face. When she got to her mouth she touched her teeth and jumped from a sting she felt on her finger.

After closer inspection, she discovered that her canines are extremely sharp so sharp that it pricked her finger with ease. When Alta looked at her wound she could see it visibly healing and soon if not for the little speck of black blood that remained no one would know that there was an injury in the first place.

'Hold up, black blood?!'

Although having black blood didn't surprise her as much as having 4 eyes, it is still shocking. Her hand continued to inspect her face until it got to her forehead which has 2 pointy objects protruding from her skull which are most likely horns.

They are about 20 cm in length. Her hand then inspected one of her ears only to find out that they are extremely long and pointy. Both are around 11cm. Something even more peculiar is that she could move them like a limb.

After discovering all of these things she finally realized that her senses are 10x better than they used to be. She could hear things from extremely far away and see things clearer and farther than she could have ever imagined she would be able to.

Not only are her senses enhanced but her physical capabilities are at superhuman levels.

Using her new hearing, she quickly found a river not too far away. It didn't take long for her to get there and when she did she encountered several animals drinking from the river seemingly not noticing her.

'Hungry.' Is the only thing she thought while looking at the animals. This alarmed Alta because the urge to lunge at and devourer those seemingly innocent creatures started to overwhelm her.

It didn't take long for her body to jump at one of the animals like a hungry beast. The deer-like creature didn't know what hit it. There was no resistance as Alta's claws easily ripped through the creature's tough skin creating a clean cut.

As the creature's head flew from its body, the other creatures surrounding the river were startled and hastily ran away from the area before Alta could set her sights on them.

Alta didn't care about them as she dug into the deer creature's flesh. The feeling of warm blood flowing down her cheeks made Alta's heart race from ecstasy.

After all, food tastes best when you're hungry. Before she could continue eating the creature, her instincts told her to eat the creature's soul and not just its physical body.

She then opened her mouth exposing her fangs and started to suck in a force she could feel coming from the creature's body.

A golden light began to rise from it's corpse. It swiftly went into Alta's mouth.

After eating the soul she felt energized. She no longer felt that agonizing hunger from earlier. She knew she didn't need to eat more but she wanted to eat more.

Her instincts told her to eat. Eat any living creature she finds. No matter how big or small it may be, sHE MUST EAT!

[Alta.] The system's voice brought her back from her spiraling thoughts. Those thoughts almost made her lose herself. She would have turned into a mindless glutton if she was consumed by them.

Alta stared blankly into the river. Her red eyes were staring back at her.

"What have I become?"
