Beyond the army of undead, one could see a hooded figure holding a staff made of bones with a skull on top. Purple gems were embedded in the eye sockets, giving it an eerie but beautiful look.
The hooded figure looked into the distance. His eyes filled with hatred as he glared at the city walls. He snarled and screamed.
"WILLIAM!!! COME OUT, YOU BASTARD!!"
The guards stationed at the gate and on top of the wall were startled. The scream gave them a chilling fear. The hooded boy on top of the wall was no exception.
"Kid, you have to get out of here!" One of the guards approached Luka.
Luka immediately ran away, heeding the guard's words.
Seeing that the hooded kid ran away, the guard ran to get a messenger pigeon, no, a messenger hawk to alert the Montampes manor and request the aid of the Griffin Knights. A pigeon would be too slow in delivering a message.
The guard reported to the captain of the guards and a messenger hawk carrying a reinforcement request was swiftly dispatched.
The captain of the city guards ordered his men, "Issue a request to the Adventurer Guild and Mercenary Guild. We need all the manpower we can get."
An emergency quest was posted in the city's adventurer guild hall. It was a simple but difficult quest—Defend the city from the army of undead.
Many adventurers accepted the quest for various reasons. Some accepted out of a sense of duty and justice, some accepted only for profit. There were, however, adventurers that ran away and left the city out of cowardice.
The City Guard Captain stood on top of the wall. Scanning the undead army with his eyes.
There were skeletons, zombies, flesh golems, bone golems, ghouls, etc.
The City Guard Captain thought to himself, "Using arrows on an undead army will be useless, the archers won't be able to do anything. We'll have to fight back on the ground. I hope we can buy enough time for Sir William to get here."
He turned around and spoke to the assembly of guards, "Men!! Out there is a heinous necromancer! I don't think I need to explain why foul beings like them shouldn't exist. Nevertheless, he poses a threat to the peace of the city! Fight and protect Leghorn City!!"
After the rousing speech he ordered everyone to assist the adventurers as best as they can.
The gate was opened. Countless adventurers and mercenaries poured out like a tide, with the city guards right behind to support them.
The City Guard Captain clicked his tongue and reached out to grab the handle of his war hammer that was strapped to his back.
One of the guards accompanying him was startled, "Sir Elijah, you're going to fight too?"
Captain Elijah looked at the guard, "What kind of captain would I be if I only let my subordinates do the work. What about you?"
"Sir?"
"You have a family right? A wife and a child to feed. You should flee with them if you have the chance."
"I... I don't want to be a coward, Sir. I'll fight as well."
"What if you die?"
"I won't." The guard replied with determination.
"Hmph, I like your guts, kid."
"Sir! I'm already 26 years old!"
"And I'm already way past 50. You're all children to me."
The guard sighed, deciding not to bicker. "Let's go protect this city, Sir."
"Yeah, let's."
The guard went ahead and rushed towards the city gate. But before he could even reach it, he felt something hit him in the back of his head.
"I'm sorry kid. I've seen way too many young men like you dying. I don't want to see someone as kind as you leave this world before me." Elijah grabbed the unconscious body of the guard.
An orange Aura enveloped the body of Elijah as he dashed towards the house of the guard. He handed over the unconscious body of the guard to his family and told them to run away to safety.
Elijah ran back to the scene of battle and equipped his war hammer. A soft orange glow enveloped the shaft all the way to the head. Elijah was covered in this orange energy as well.
As one might have guessed, Elijah reached the Chromatic Stage. He gripped the war hammer tightly, took a stance, and kicked off the ground, launching himself in the middle of the undead army.
He slammed the hammer downwards as soon as he reached the ground, creating a shockwave that blew away undead in a 30-meter radius. More undead quickly filled in the missing space, opting to attack Elijah, not that they can think to make that choice anyway. They were just following simple orders from the necromancer: Kill.
Elijah swung his hammer and undead were blasted away in a fan-shaped cone. The majority of the undead were skeletons, both using ranged and melee attacks like bows and arrows or swords.
The same scene kept going for quite a while. Hundreds of skeletons were being demolished every time Elijah swung his hammer. Soon the undead surrounding him stopped attacking.
At the very back of the undead army, the necromancer gritted his teeth. With a single thought, he commanded multiple gigantic undead to go deal with Elijah. 3 flesh golems and 2 bone golems.
Elijah noticed what was happening as he saw the giants steadily approaching him. He muttered under his breath, "Shit..."
