Salma, a mother expecting her second baby, is always oppressed by her cruel husband. He keeps telling her she is a slave to him and she had better give birth to another son. Or he'll kill the baby.
"Salma!", Riswan , Salma's husband calls to her," listen you foolish woman,
bring me some tea."
Salma runs to the kitchen, makes some tea and takes it to her husband.
Riswan takes the tea from Salma and starts to trash talk her, "I hope you remember what I told you, if this baby ends up being a girl then I'll throw her into the river, got that!"
Salma looks up to Riswan and replies, "listen Riswan, a female child is also a blessing from God and I know she'll take care of us one day."
Hearing this, Riswan looses his cool. He throws the cup of tea to the floor, " are you mad! why would you say that when you know I hate female children."
Riswan's aunt steps in to save Salma, "listen Riswan you are making so much noise if the baby turns out to be girl she will still be your child and that's final!"
A week later, Salma is taken to the hospital. Riswan, aunt Mirabel and 2year old Tony are anxiously waiting for the doctor. 20 minutes later, everyone hears the sound of a baby. Tony looks at his aunt," aunt, is that my baby sister? "
Riswan looks at Tony, " listen my boy, its not a sister, it's a brother."
Suddenly the doctor comes out of the room and congratulates Riswan while shaking his hand, " congratulations Mr Riswan, your wife just gave birth to a baby girl."
The news that was supposed to be good turns out to be sour. The smile on Riswan's face starts to fade as he slowly with draws his hand from the doctors and gives a thanking reply with a low voice.
The next day ,Salma is dressing the new born baby, as little Tony is anxiously waiting to hold his little sister. She finishes dressing her and as she is about to give Tony the baby,Riswan gets hold of her.
Salma gets tense, " Riswan, what are you doing. "
Riswan looks at the baby and tells Salma he is going to do as he promised, I am going to throw this baby into the river as I promised I would."
Little Tony holds his father's arm and pleads with him," please father don't throw my little sister in the river she is good girl. "
Riswan takes hold of Tony's arm and pushes him to the floor and looks at Salma whose cheeks are overflowed with tears but he feels no mercy as he starts to leave. Tony quickly runs to the backyard to call his aunt. Riswan leaves the house and starts to head for the nearby river while a crying and pleading Salma runs after him," listen Riswan! please don't throw my baby away please I-I-I beg you have mercy she's your child Riswan."
Meanwhile at the house, Tony starts to cry in front of her aunt who repeatedly questions him why he is crying. And he finally opens up to tell his aunt what just happened. Mirabel takes Tony's hand and goes into the house only to find Salma and Riswan not in the house. She picks up her rifle and follows Riswan to the river.
Riswan and Salma reach the river. He raises the baby in the air to throw her as she keeps crying. Salma goes to the ground and touches Riswan's legs and continuously pleads with him," please Riswan don't throw my child in the river I beg you. "
Just then a rifle shoot is heard. when they both turn they see aunt Mirabel with a rifle in her hand," listen Riswan! give the baby to her mother now!"
With fear and anger, Riswan hands the baby over to Salma and leaves.
Salma thanks aunt Mirabel and gives her the right to name the baby. Which aunt Mirabel does, " I am grateful for the privilege. We will call her Mable."
