“Ouch. Watch it.” Layla said with a threatening tone.
“Oh, sorry dear.”
“It’s okay, continue.” Hector chimed in, which got him a death glare from Layla.
“Well, you’re not the one she stabbed.” Layla said through gritted teeth.
“It’s a pin, you’ll live.” Felipe added impatiently.
“Remind me once again why you’re here dear?” Layla said with a overly sweet tone, her head peaking out from the top of the curtain, facing Felipe with raised eyebrows.
“Oh Mr. Calles I have to agree with your bride, after all it is bad luck to see her in her dress before the wedding.” The lady adjusting the dress said from behind the curtain, clearly not picking up on the tension in the room.
“Oh I think we’ve already had the worst of luck” Layla said sarcastically.
Felipe gave her a threatening look while hector reached for his gun.
Layla pouted for a second, then put on a phony smile and turned to face the clearly confused women staring at her. “Oh my, that must have sounded crazy to you, you have no idea what bad luck we’ve been having so far, the florist called and said the flowers wont be Maroon red but Carmine. Can you believe it CARMINE RED. Ugh my wedding is ruined. RUINED.” Then She kept rambling on about every little made up detail, like a true bridezilla.
Felipe just watched her talk for 10 minutes straight about how the chairs were not arranged ‘correctly’ with amazement.
Hector had gotten back to his phone, with a hint of smile on his face.
After the lady was done adjusting the dress she told Layla to turn and see herself in the mirror.
“ ‘This’ is all of it? Like the whole dress? Why don’t I just go in my birthday suit?” Layla said twisting her face.
“This is the model your fiance picked dear.” The lady said admiring her work.
Layla turned furiously and stared Felipe and Hector waiting for an explanation.
“It’s inspired by what the last bride in our ‘family’ wore. Come on out, give us a twirl.” Hector said looking up from his phone.
“Uh-uh, not happening. This doesn’t even support my boobs, neither does it cover… honestly anything. What kind of girl did your family married into last time? I’ve seen strippers covering more than this dress.”
Hector made a fake cough to stop her.
“I’m sure it’s not that bad just come out already.” Felipe said impatiently.
“Fine.” Layla said aggressively.
She pushed the curtain wide open and stomped out, the lady stumbled after her holding the train above the ground.
“It would look much better if you’d put on these shoes.” She said holding up a pair of high heel shoes with red bottoms, struggling to keep the dress from going under Layla bare feet and tripping her.
“Nope, too high.” Layla said dismissively.
Hector watched indifferently, while Felipe stared at the dress with widened eyes.
“What the hell is that? Are guests supposed to give their gifts in singles?” Felipe said with disgust.
“Hey, she said this is your choice.” Layla said angrily pointing at the lady who jumped at the accusation.
“He said Mr.Calles chose this.” She said pointing at hector with a shaky hand, she was too nervous under Layla and Felipe gaze.
They all turned to Hector.
“What? That’s almost like what Candy wore for their wedding. Felipe’s mother will expect yours to be better than Candy.” Hector said nonchalantly.
“I don’t care what she wants. I will not have a picture of my wife dressed like whatever that is, shown to my family and work associates.” Felipe said pointing to the naked wedding dress.
“Wow, you’re just gonna pass the fact that your cousin married a girl named Candy? Did they get married at the same strip club she worked?” Layla said with a sarcastic laugh.
“Now is not the time.” Felipe said gesturing to the woman who was trying to make sense of what was happening.
“Fine, but I will make fun of it later.” Layla said with a diabolical smile. “Ok I’m choosing the next one. let’s go Emily.” She said grabbing the front of the dress jumping back behind the curtain which was installed today for trying on the wedding dresses.
“It’s Everly.” The lady said still confused about what just happened.
“Whatever.” Layla yelled back from behind the curtain even though she didn't have to.
Layla didn’t came out for half an hour, every now and then they could hear her arguing with the dress lady.
She finally came out. “What do you think?” Layla asked holding up her skirt a little.
“No.” Hector said after a glance then went back to his phone.
“Why the hell not?” Layla said pouting.
“It’s too… plain. It’s a wedding dress, and you’re marrying to a very glamorous ‘family’. You can’t wear that.” Hector said.
“The glamorous family whose last bride was named candy?” Layla said sarcastically with raised eyebrows.
“That’s irrelevant, you can’t wear something like that.” Hector said with an angry undertone.
Layla took a few steps towards him and said in a challenging voice, “well too bad, cuz THIS is what I’m wearing.”
Hector looked up from his phone, first at Layla, then at Felipe, “are you gonna comment on this.” He said pointing at Layla.
Felipe stopped taping his foot on the ground and got up shaking his head, “whatever, as long as it’s not another none-dress dress. We don’t have all day.” He said heading out.
Layla smiled triumphantly at Hector.
Hector gave her a threatening look till she disappeared behind the curtain once more.
