She Was Hired

She didn't know which utensil went where, so the boy could do that. He had been here longer than her, at least.

The night flew by just like that. With her scrubbing diligently while the boy got better and better at drying the dishes and running to get them back into their original places.

By the end of the shift, the cooks and chefs were sitting on top of their small chairs.

"New Girl," an older gentleman called. "Care for some food?"

Anna didn't know what to say.

"Don't worry. It's leftovers that we are supposed to eat once the club closes. You worked a good night, so join us."

She was hungry enough that she didn't act polite. She joined them promptly and chewed her food slowly.

"Eat a bit more," someone said, handing her some more food. Anna looked at them oddly, suspicion blooming in their hearts. The guy shrugged. "We saw you coming in yesterday. No one is gonna feed you here if you don't ask for it. We cook for others every day so we are feeding you."
