The screen showed no number. Finally, she took the call and remained silent.

"Zero." The voice was unfamiliar, but she knew who it was. "How about we meet?" the Assistant Director said calmly. There was a tinge of smugness in his voice which Anna attributed to finding her number. He was also happy that she had picked the phone up.

She didn't dignify him with a response. "Your boss gave me full authority over the team. You can freely speak to me and take orders for the next missions."

She let him speak for a minute and wondered how such an ill-spoken and dim-witted person had trumped Elijah Burke.

But there were many stupid people who climbed to the top just by their determination. What she considered stupid could be unimaginable to someone who was clever. Therefore, his aggressive and finesse-less actions caught people off guard. This had happened so many times in the world that she didn't need to think about it deeply.
