Chapter 14: The Second Son

Rowan stared. The Elven prince came to a standstill beside his brother and met her surprised gaze with his own. Elduine was quicker to hide his surprise, but not before his brother noticed. Salinias looked from his brother to the heir of King Gregan’s kingdom. Elduine whispered something and Salinais spoke slowly, as if to a child.

“We allow our noble princes to be generals.”

“We do as well,” King Gregan noted.

King Gregan suddenly seemed to be growing tired, and it didn’t go unnoticed by the Elves.

“Mind your King!” Salinias cried as Gregan began to buckle at the knees.

General Tarik and Captain Phalen leaped into action and guided King Gregan to the floor.

“Uncle!” Rowan held Gregan’s hand. It was hot to touch. Feeling his forehead, Rowan realized the fever had returned.

The King’s lips moved, and he whispered, “I’m alright, I’m alright. I’m just tired.”

Elduine called for the guards and a healer. He cast a worried glance at Rowan.
