Chapter 31: Cassie

The Authors After Dark Farewell Party showed no signs of slowing down as Chris handed Cassie a Mojito and Kristi a rum and Coke. Cassie’s mother had already wandered off, mopey that Jack had not shown up yet. Cassie glanced around the ballroom, her mother no longer in sight. Perhaps, she had given up and went back to the room. Cassie hoped her mother would be all right. Sometimes, people became too attached to someone who had no interest in them. Yet, every time Cassie caught Jack Sutherland looking at her mother, he seemed genuinely interested. There’s no way she misread the man. So, why wasn’t he stepping up to the plate?

“You okay?” Kristi touched Cassie’s arm, a concerned look on her face.

Cassie nodded. “I was just looking for my mother. She’s been doing her best to catch Jack Sutherland’s attention, but for some reason, he’s not giving it. I think she had her hopes pretty high.”
