Chapter 9 With Darkness Brings Death

As we were driving, I saw the old sign that says, "Welcome to Wyoming." We were only 85 miles from the front. I needed to sleep, I have not in days. I could not I did not know if we were going to be ambushed or shot off the road. My eyes could not stay open. I laid my head on the windowsill and shut my eyes.

I woke up the truck going over bumpy roads. As the headlights of the truck shut off the darkness was like camouflage, blocking the other trucks.

"Where are we?" I asked as I sat up.

"Were about 4 miles from the front." Zodof said yawning.

We both got out of the trucks, and we all gathered in front of this wheat field. There is about 325 of us. I knew that a lot of these men would die.

"We will attack at night and catch them off guard. We will begin marching in 2 hours." Zodof said looking over all of us.

I grabbed my rifle and an AK-47, just in case things got intense. I started an hour early because I need to be there before everyone else. I was jogging through the thick brush. It felt like forever before I reached the base. As I started to settle down on the side of the mountain. I was about half a mile out. I then grabbed my rifle, checked the clip, and laid down. I breathed in and looked down my scope. There were bright lights surrounding the base. I gazed over the base trying my best to count all the guards. Suddenly I heard a low rumble. It startled me and I jumped. I then realized that it was just thunder. Soon a light rain started to fall. Within minutes my ghillie suit became soaked. As the rain continued to fall, and flash of lightning covered the sky. My radio came on, Zodof was in position. Suddenly a bolt of lightning shot down and struck the generator. All the light shut off and the power was out.

It would be the perfect time to move in, but I could not see the guards. They couldn't see me. Suddenly gunfire broke out, I grabbed my radio and asked.

"What the hell are you thinking."

"Come down here and join the fight." Zodof insisted

jkI really did not want to go down there and fight because I knew that I might die; I was scared. They were down there fighting blind; all I could see were flashing lights from the gun fire and the lightning. The rain fall grew hard and fast. My options were either to stay up in the mountain and wait for the power to kick back on or go down there and fight blind. I went ahead and stayed up in the mountain. I laid there and waited just listening to the gun fight. about 30 minutes in the lights kicked back on. I quickly looked down my sight looking for anyone. I spotted the enemy, and I held my sight on him. I hesitated, I just kept looking at him. With my finger on the trigger slightly squeezed. A tear ran down my cheek and I pulled the trigger, his body dropped to the floor. My heart was racing, knowing that I had just killed a U.S soldier.

I could not do that again a grabbed my rifles and heading back to the trucks. It was about 6:30 in the morning and I was sitting in the truck waiting for Zodof to come back. About a half an hour later Russian soldiers stated to appear from the forest. I then saw Zodof running to the truck. I was confused at first but I saw the angry look on his face. He opened the door and ripped me out. I fell into the mud, but I quickly got back to my feet.

"You left all these men behind." Zodof yelled

"I can not stand killing a U.S soldiers." I said yelling back

Zodof socked me in the face, and I fell tot the ground. I got angry and I lunged at Zodof tackling him. I got on top of him, and I raised my fist. I looked at him with rage, but I did not hit him, even though I wanted to do it so bad. I got off him and he looked at me with discus. As he got up, he whipped the mud off his face.

"What are all you pigs looking at!!" Zodof yelled

Everyone turned away quickly. The soldiers packed up the supplies and got into the trucks. I then hoped into the truck with Zodof.
