Chapter 10 Burning Fires

I fell asleep, I was so exhausted. The sun shined through the window I woke me up and rubbed my eyes.

"Ware, are we?" I asked Zodof.

He did not reply. I guess he was still mad at me he did not even look at me. A looked toward the road wondering ware we were. We then passed a sign that said. Arizona, I guess we were heading back to the base. I ended up falling back to sleep.

Suddenly a heard a loud explosion. I jumped up and looked in the review mirror and the truck behind us was in flames. We were being ambushed. Zodof slammed on the gas. I looked to my left and spotted a U.S military hummer. 50 cal. Machine gun mounted on top. I looked at the gunner on top. He was not U.S military, it was the militia. He then took fire at the truck in front of us, the 50 cal. ripped that truck apart. All the tucks came to a stop and Russian soldiers came out and open fired. I knew that they would not be able to take down the hummer. The gunner mowed down the soldiers. The firing stopped and the gun was jammed, he was trying to clear it. Suddenly a Russian soldier pulled out an RPG and pointed it at the enemy. He fired it; it struck the hummer on the right side. The trunk then exploded; pieces of shrapnel metal flew everywhere hitting a couple of us. After I gather what just happened, I hurried up and tried to help everyone that was injured.

We loaded everyone into the trucks and heading to camp. All I could think about is Karly. I can remember her face and the way she smiles at me. Then I lost my train of thought because people in the back were screaming in pain. It filled my head and flashbacks of my family started to appear. A tear ran down my face. I quickly wiped it away and looked outside to the road.

Zodof put on the radio, it was classical music. I recognized the song, it was "Beethoven Moonlight Sonata." I guess he was trying to drown out the moans from the back. It was very peaceful.
