I slammed the door to my apartment closed as I entered. I slumped against the door.
"You're home early." I looked over to see my roommate Tiana. "Are you ok?" She started to walk towards me as I stormed off into my room slamming and locking the door behind me. I flopped onto my bed and proceeded to scream into my pillow.
"Diamond?" I heard Tiana through my door. "Diamond, I know you're in there." I groaned as I got up from my bed and headed towards my bedroom door. If I didn't open it, she would have a fit.
I stopped, however, when my hand reached out and touched the doorknob. I looked over at my desk and saw my notebook, then looked through my window which outside had a fire escape that led to the roof. That was a better choice then talking to Tiana right now.
I quickly walked over grabbed my notebook and a pencil and made my way to the top of the roof.
Once getting there I opened the notebook. The first paper I saw was my birth certificate. My name was clear as day, but my parents' names were whited out. You can tell there were names there, but whatever they were was erased. It wasn't uncommon for this to happen, but it still hurt not to know who your parents were and that someone took it upon themselves to hide them from you. I held back tears as I flipped through page after page after page until I got to an empty one.
Dear Mom & Dad,
I'd like to state once again that I know you won't be reading these since I don't know who you are but that doesn't matter. I wanted to ask for some advice. There really isn't anyone I can look up to, but people are going to be looking up to me, that is if I succeed.
I've been chosen to be the girl to go to Laguna Bay School for Boys. Keywords: "For Boys"! I don't know how I'm supposed to handle this. I mean this is a lot of weight to have on my shoulders. I'm going to be the first girl to go to a boys school to prove that girls are just as academically capable as a boy is. God knows I'm not the girl for this. I'm an average D student. I know what Tiana and Lasaly would say.
"It's only because you don't have time for school and you're a bad tester that your grades are the way they are." Or some other bullshit like that.
How am I supposed to do this on my own? They've done extensive research on me and only chose me because of my economic background and my grades.
The man who gave me the message is a women's rights supporter, and I can't seem to get his words out of my head.
"The government wants you to fail, are you going to let them get away with that." What the hell is that supposed to mean?
I hate it when people just assume how I'm supposed to react.
No, I don't like that they would've chosen me only to make an example of me. Do they really believe that if they show that women aren't academically capable as men that we'll stop trying to get rights? I'll make sure, and I'll get a whole lot of people who will help me make sure, that they chose me out of thousands of capable women who are way smarter than me. In fact, I'm going to show that I can at least turn into a B average student. Let's just hope I'll have the time to go to school, have a job, and be able to afford everything.
Love, your forgotten daughter
"You know," I jumped at the sudden voice. I looked around and found Tiana. "You really need to find a new hiding spot."
"Call me a cat. I think better in high places." I shrugged as she came over and sat next to me.
"A man came over and dropped this off." She passed me a package. I looked at the package, and it was labeled; Laguna Bay School for Boys.
"Fabulous…" I sighed as I reluctantly opened the box.
Within the box was a uniform, complete with the shoes, a folder, a letter, and a handbook.
"They want you to wear this?" Tiana took out the uniform with disgust, of course, it was a boy's uniform. It was a boys' school.
"I guess they do." I chuckled as she through the uniform back in the box and pulled out the handbook.
"Well, we'll see what we can tweak with the rules they have." She smiles as she opens the book.
I smile and shake my head as I open the letter they sent me.
Dear Diamond Quinn,
We are pleased to welcome you into the Laguna Bay School for Boys.
In this box is your schedule, a map of the school, a student handbook, a uniform complete with the shoes, your room number, your expected day to move in, your first day of class, as well as a list of all extracurricular activities you are suited for. And given you are a student from a poor district, you will also find a job schedule, that conforms to your school schedule, and a free ride to the school the day you are expected to move into your dorm room.
We want you to keep in mind that this is still a school for boys, so we advise that if you feel unsafe in anyway to report to the office immediately.
Like they would really protect me from perverts. I needed to get a new thing of mace anyway.
You're even getting a room to yourself.
Once again we want to welcome you to the school, and we can't wait to see you in our halls.
Have a nice day.
I picked up the folder and looked through all of the documents. "You've got to be kidding me."
"What?"
"They want me to move in next Monday." I passed her the paper that said so.
"Well, I guess that means I have to find a new roommate and you better start packing." She said as she started putting things back in the box.
"Today is my only day off. I won't have time to go through everything and pack everything." I sighed as she moved the box off of my lap.
"Well, I guess that means you better call your friends and we are going to get this packing party started. And I'm going to get started on making this uniform more feminine." And with that, she left the roof. I pulled out my notebook.
P.S. I don't think I would be where I am if it wasn't for Tiana and Lasaly. Wherever you guys are God gave me people that helped me grow up into someone I can be proud of. If we ever meet hopefully, you'll be proud of me too.
