Chapter 37

Lucinda's POV

I shifted from one foot to another under Lynn's scrutinizing gaze. Why do I feel like I just got caught doing something I shouldn't be doing... Like stealing a cookie from a jar.

I understand how this situation may look to her. I am in her boyfriends house wearing his shirt but I could totally explain this... If she would understand.

I stood there still unable to say anything and Donavan got out of the kitchen and cleared his throat rather loudly which happened to get her to switch her attention from me to him.

"I didn't know you were coming..."

"I didn't know that you'd have a guest."

I winced when she emphasized the word guest. What the fuck is her problem? What kind of person does she think I am? I'm dating her cousin for God sakes!

"I'm gonna go..."

I finally said after their intense stare down. They both looked at me at the same time but I had already begun to walk towards the elevator.

I picked up my purse and plushy when I felt someone grab my wrist. I looked up and saw Donavan looking at me with an apologetic smile.

"I'll talk to you later..."

I nodded and he let me go. I walked out of the penthouse and stepped in the elevator. Just as the doors were closing I heard the argument already begin.

I stood in the elevator while I watched the numbers change every few seconds while listening to the comforting sound of elevator music.

Eventually I made it to the lobby which I also hadn't noticed was pretty fancy upon my arrival. From the pristine walls and marbled floor to the fancy looking reception desk and glass revolving doors I assumed it cost a fortune to live here.

How did I not notice this before?

It's not like I couldn't afford it but I'm pretty sure they wouldn't let me keep Evgeny here. Just as I thought a 'No Pets Allowed' sign hung proudly on the window. I rolled my eyes and made my way into the outside world.

I had planned to spend my day with Donavan so I literally have no other plans. I figured I could visit the library but I'm still not done with that other book yet and that witch Lisa might spoil it for me.

With no where to go I decided to wonder. I walked and eventually I made it to Tia's Café. I walked into the familiar place which always smelled like freshly brewed coffee which brought a feeling of nostalgia over me.

Damn! It's feels like ages since I was last here.

"Lucy!"

The ever friendly staff of Tia's Café greeted me upon my arrival. I smiled and waved at all of them.

The customers in line all groaned but sighed in relief when they saw me go past the counter into the kitchen instead.

I laughed at their reaction. They probably thought I was gonna get another opportunity to cut in line.

"Tia!"

"Yes my angel..."

How ironic. I am everything but...

"Are you short on staff today because I would love to be a helping hand."

She looked at me with scepticism in her eyes. I totally understand where she's coming from. I'm probably the laziest person she's ever met. I physically cringe at the word 'work'.

"What's the occasion?"

"I'm feeling very generous today and would love to help my favorite mother figure"

I had the brightness smile on my face I could blinden pilots. She narrowed her eyes at me and I pouted in return.

"You had plans and they got canceled didn't they?"

My smile dropped into a frown of annoyance. How dare she know me so well! She laughed at my sudden change in emotion then placed her hand on my shoulder.

"No better time to take advantage of you now isn't it? You can put on an apron and help Diego out at the register. We're very swamped today and with your pretty face you'll have so many tips you could buy a car."

I laughed. I grabbed a key off the wall to get a locker to place my stuff.

"Oh and nice shirt..."

I looked down and noticed that I was still wearing Donavan's shirt. A blushed crept up my face but I quickly hid it and practically sprinted towards the lockers and that's when I realized...

I left my shirt at Donavan's place!

I sighed. I'll just get it later on. I placed them in the locker and stared at my plushy. I should really give that thing a name.

After putting on an extra apron I joined Dee in the front on the stoor behind the counter. I stood behind a cash register that was next to the one Dee was behind.

He hadn't spoken a word to me ever since I entered. I feel like he's mad at me for something that I don't even know about. After a few minutes of silence he spoke.

"How's slumming it with my evil twin?"

"Suburban"

He let out something that sounded like a scoff and a giggle. I smiled because I was able to make him laugh.

"Of course you would say something like that. The opposite of the slums is the suburbs."

"I'm pretty sure I understand my own joke"

"Well I was just explaining it to um... This very confused customer over here"

"Mmhm..."

I rolled my eyes and I took a few orders after that. I could feel his curiosity from where I stood but it seemed like he wasn't gonna try and ask so I engaged him.

"What?"

"Nice shirt... Practically radiates manliness"

I let out a breathy chuckle. How the fuck does something radiate manliness?

"I'm assuming you're already stealing clothes from the future Mr Morningstar"

"Why can't I be Mrs-"

"Parker? Honey you already know he's changing his last name to yours."

I laughed.

"It's not his shirt..."

Diego lost interest in whatever he was doing and turned his attention to me. This boy will do anything for gossip.

"Then who's is it... Because I can tell for sure that isn't my brother's shirt."

"It's a long story."

"I got time-"

A customer cleared his throat waiting impatiently for his turn. Considering the fact that this place has Diego as one of their cashiers I wonder how they still stay in business. This boy is distracted by literally anything and everything.

He shoots a glare at the customer with a comb over a bald spot and delivers an insult which leaves the man flustered and Diego getting a scolding from his mother.

I wonder how Tia keeps up with him. While he gets dragged into the kitchen for dish duty he shoots me a look that says 'We'll-finish-this-later' and I roll my eyes.

I turn back around and help the customer in front of me with a picture perfect smile.
