Chapter 48

Lucinda's POV

I sat on my porch steps waiting impatiently for Donny who said he would come and pick me up. This morning I got the list of everything that Diego needs us to do and let me say... He did really do the bare minimum.

Not only did I wake up in a bad mood, now I have to work which could be the single worst thing that could ever happen to me. After a few more minutes I contemplated going back into my house to pass out on the couch and just as I stood up he pulled up into my driveway.

I ran my fingers through my ash-gray locks and walked to the passenger seat of the car. Once inside I admired the classy interior of the car. The leather seats were pristine and posh and there was not a single spec of dust anywhere in sight. It also smelt good which gave off the fact that this car is rarely used.

After exchanging simple forms of greeting we were off to our first location, which just happened to be a flower shop just a little bit out of town.

Entering the quaint little shop I was immediately hit by the scent of flowers of different kinds. I sneezed and Donny beside me said 'Bless you'. I thanked him and walked up to the register where a woman, who looked to be in her mid forties sat there taping away at a computer.

Her fiery-red hair sat atop her head in a neat bun. Red rimmed glasses were perched upon her freckled nose while a slight content smile adorned her face. She was dressed in a flowery summer dress which had a gold chain-belt around her waist. She noticed our presence and her smile doubled in size.

"Why hello there... Welcome to Volwer Flower Shop. My name is Cindy. How can I help you?"

I reciprocated her smile.

"Hi Cindy. I'm Lucy and this is Donavan."

He smiled slightly and waved at her.

"Well aren't you guys just the cutest couple I've ever seen. How long have you been married?"

My eyebrows skyrocketed into my hairline. Married?! Me and Donavan?! Although the idea didn't sound so bad...

"Married?"

"Well yes... You two look perfect for each other and I only assumed you were husband and wife. I've got a keen eye you know."

A warm feeling spread throughout my chest. She thought me and Donny are perfect for each other. Wait- why does that matter? He's got a girlfriend and I just happen to be dating his girlfriends cousin. Noticing that I kept quiet for too long I attempted to shut down Cindy's claims.

"What- we're not- He's not my..."

"We aren't married Cindy. We're just friends. Right Lucy?"

Lucy... Not Butterfly.

A ripple- fuck that. A fucking wave of pain shot throughout my chest. Why the fuck did that hurt more than I thought it would? Gulping down the pain I turned to Cindy with a beaming smile on my face.

"Right. Just friends. Okay now that that's out of the way, Cindy is the order for the two dozen centerpieces for Diego Velasquez ready?"

"Let me just check for you sweetheart."

She turned back to her computer and started typing away. At some point Donny had meandered away from me and was absent mindedly checking out the flowers around the shop.

He had a relaxed look on his face, which suggested that he was calm. The ash-gray locks on his head were curled and grazing against his forehead. I found my hands itching to run my fingers through them.

My gaze lingered lower and admired his build. He was buff but not like too much it becomes gross. His leather jacket hugged his muscles in a good way which gave him a rugged look. I found myself wondering what it would be like to held in his arms.

"Ah yes... I've found it. Two dozen centerpieces for Diego Velasquez to be delivered to Xortis lake house on Thursday."

"Yes... That's the one."

"Perfect. Anything else you need sweetheart?"

"No thank you Cindy. Thank you for the help..."

"No problem sugar... But take my word for it, he may say you're just friends but he's totally smitten by you."

"No... I mean we're both dating separate people..."

"The more you deny it, the more you won't see sweetheart. Goodluck on your journey together though. I'm rooting for you."

Weirdly I found myself smiling at Cindy and her encouragement for me and Donny to become a thing. Even though it can never be... I found a small part of myself hoping it would.

After the flower shop we were going up and down confirming most orders of things that had to be delivered on Thursday. Then from there we went to a menu sampling, cake tasting which Dee and Matty joined us for and finally the attire fitting.

Once that was done we loaded all other clothes inside of Donny's car. The last thing we had to do was get the rings and we were done for the day.

Walking into the jewelry store, Donny announced that he had to go to the bathroom and asked me to get the rings. I walked up to the register and gave the man Dee's receipt.

"Hello... I'm here to collect Diego Velasquez and Mathias Xortis' rings."

"Ah... Of course. Let me go and retrieve those for you."

While he had gone to the backroom to retrieve those rings I found myself admiring the rings behind the glass case. One in particular caught my eye. A princess cut black-diamond ring with tiny diamonds surrounding it.

"Would you like to try it on?"

My eyes shot up to the woman who stood behind the counter. She had a polite smile on her face.

"No... It's fine."

"Seriously I insist... Let me get it out for you."

She reached for the key around her neck and unlocked the glass case. Something about this woman told me that she was persistent and doesn't like to take no for an answer. Kind of like Brendaline who works in a jewelry shop.

Once she had the ring in her hands she gestured for me to give her my hand and she placed the ring on my ring finger.

"Absolutely gorgeous... Don't you think?"

I bite my lip and flexed my finger. It does look on my finger. Even better than it was sitting in the glass case.

"Yeah... It's gorgeous."

"That looks good on you..."

I turned around to find Donny standing right behind me with his eyes on the ring on my hand. Panicked - for some reason - I quickly took it off and handed back to the lady at the counter who looked at me weirdly but put the ring back.

I cleared my throat uncomfortably and sighed deeply. Donny kept quiet and I found his silence strangely unsettling. A few minutes later the man came back and handed me a small paper bag with both rings inside. I thanked and left the jewelry shop.

Donny drove me home and once we got there we carried everything inside. Once done I escorted him to the door.

"Hey... Are we good?"

I was taken aback by his question but decided to go along with it.

"Yeah. We're good."

"Cool. See you around Butterfly."

Butterfly...

Smiling I saw him off until he was in his car then I closed my front door. I went into my kitchen and poured myself a glass of wine. Sighing I took a sip and went to cuddle up on the couch with Evgeny.
