Chapter 75

Lucinda's POV

Peeling my eyes open I stretched from my uncomfortable position on the couch. Twisting my neck from side to side to get rid of the aching feeling there I rubbed my eyes. Checking my phone I saw that it was seven am.

A notification popped up from Green Attorneys and I groaned. I almost forgot about that. Apparently I had a nine am appointment with them so I plugged in my phone and headed straight to the shower.

My sour mood had yet to dissipate. After taking my time in the shower I got dressed into the closest thing I could find in my bag. Putting my hair up in a messy bun I grabbed my purse and opened the door to the room and found Donny there with his fist in the air.

We both blinked before he put his fist down and put his hands in his pockets.

"Morning..."

I smiled slightly and waved a little.

"Morning"

"I was thinking maybe we could have some breakfast..."

I checked the time and nodded. I still had some time before the meeting with Misha Green so why not.

Exiting the building we headed to the diner right across the street from the Inn. Great marketing strategy.

The interior of the diner was 1950's style with a jukebox next to the wall and surrounding table around the kitchen which was conveniently placed in the middle-back of the building. Even the waitresses had a uniform similar to those back in the day.

Sitting down in a random booth a brunette middle-aged woman with a go-lucky attitude took our order. Why is everyone in this goddamn town so happy?!

"Isn't it weird how everyone we've met so far is extremely happy for some reason?"

I looked up at Donny in surprise as he just phrased my exact thoughts. He looked at me with a confused expression.

"What?"

"You just- Nothing."

After a short breakfast and an even shorter conversation we headed to Green Attorneys. On the ride there mutiple thoughts were swirling through my head. What the was waiting for me there? Probably a mountain of inherited debt. How the hell did he survive for that long anyway? I always just assumed he'd been stabbed in a random alley or died in a bar fight.

Forgotten, insignificant, unreliable and useless.

That's all he'd always been to me so I honestly expect nothing more. Donny never questioned my silence, he only held my hand while trying to comfort me which was honestly working wonders. Pulling up into the parking lot of the extremely flashy building we got out and headed towards the reception.

"9am appointment with Misha Green."

The receptionist looked me up and down and rolled her eyes while typing something in her computer. She placed two visitation cards on the desk.

"Third floor, last office down the hall"

I gave one of the cards to Donny and we walked towards the elevator and scanned the cards at the door. The elevator dinged opened and we walked inside. Strange that such a high-tech building was in a small town such as Eversden. I wonder where they got the money to maintain it.

Getting off the elevator we walked down the long hallway to the dreadful office. Once outside I raised my hand and knocked twice before there was an answer from inside telling us to enter.

Upon entrance the woman sitting behind the desk, a brunette with eyes the color of mud who looked to be in her late fifties to early sixties, stood up abruptly and made her way towards me before enveloping me in a bear hug. Stunned, I stood there immobile as she hug the life out of me.

Realising that I wasn't reciprocating the act she back away and swiped at newly formed tears at the corner of her eyes.

"My apologies... I've just been wanting to meet you for so long that my emotions overcame me."

Cautiously taking a step back from her in a subtle way I asked her a question.

"Do I know you?"

She smiler sweetly and shook her head slightly.

"I don't think you knew of my existence... I'm Misha Green, co-owner- well now sole owner of Green Attorney's and your stepmother."

She stuck her hand out at me with a hopeful look in her eyes. I just stared at it like it was the scum of the earth.

"Stepmother?"

The tone of my voice was eerily calm and she retracted her hand. The sad excuse of a father remarried and moved on with his life like me and my mom never meant shit to him.

"Uh yes... Why don't we sit down and talk for a bit."

My legs remained rooted to the floor and with a slight nudge from Donny I went and sat across from this so called stepmother. With my arms crossed I nodded my head at her to explain herself.

"A little over eighteen years ago I met your father-"

"Alfred O'Connol"

I dismissed. She pressed her lips into a thin line before continuing with her forlorn smile.

"Yes. At the time he was- not doing so well but I saw potential in him. After taking him to therapy for a few months he began to change the way he saw the world and himself. Alfie was always filled with a tremendous amount of guilt given his difficult past."

I put on a tight lipped smile.

"I'm sure it must have been hard for 'Alfie' but I couldn't care less about what kind of life he had after he abandoned me."

Misha seemed flustered by my response but still kept her composure. Donny next to me was as quiet as he was on the road on our way here.

"I understand that you feel-"

I banged my hand on the table startling her and Donny causing her to move back in her seat.

"No. You don't understand and you never will. Now cut the sappy bullshit and tell me why I'm here!"

She sighed and placed her hands back on the table.

"There's an inheritance-"

I scoffed maniacally. I fucking knew it.

"So much does he owe, hmm? Hundreds, millions?"

Misha furrowed her eyebrows in confusion.

"I'm afraid you are mistaken Valeria-"

I interjected.

"It's Lucy."

She swallowed a knot in her throat and clenched her teeth together. Clearly I was getting on her nerves and that make me happy.

"Yes. As the daughter of Alfred O'Connol and his last living relative you are the sole inheritor of the O'Connol fortune."

I sat down in surprise and disbelief.

"Fortune?"

"Yes. Alfred O'Connol is- was a major shareholder of every single business in this town and as stipulated on his will you are to inherit all of it."

My eyes twitched. She was lying right?

It can't be...

But the look on her fake face was telling me otherwise. I let out a deep breath and calmly placed my hands on her desk.

"It's very obvious that the beginning of your 'I made my husband who he is' is absolutely bullshit... So why don't you tell me the real reason why you called me here Misha."
