Chapter 79

Lucinda's POV

Peace. Its what I felt while laying on Donavan's chest while he raked his hands through my hair. Like the world didn't matter in that moment, just me and him. His chest rose steadily with every breath he took and his heartbeat was steady.

He sighed and held me tighter in his arms. I snuggled up closer to him and wished that I could just stay like this forever. In Donny's arms, no caring about a single thing in the world except the way he makes me feel.

"It's pretty shitty is it not?"

I tilted my head upwards to look at him but his eyes remained on the ceiling.

"What is?"

"This whole situation... It's pretty fucked up."

I sighed.

"Yeah... It is. But unfortunately that's life, never fair to anyone and those who benefit are the ones who found a way to beat the system."

He placed a gentle kiss on my forehead.

"That's absolute bullshit. But Butterfly I promise you that I will do everything in my power to make it all better for you."

I smiled gently. As much as I wanted to believe his words I knew it all depended on my decision. Currently my odds were fifty-fifty and I am playing it dangerously close to the deadline. Tomorrow is my last day and the decision I make will influence how I'm going to spend my future.

But just for this moment, this small stolen moment in time where I've felt the most happiness that I've ever felt in a very long time, I'd like to just enjoy it.

Unfortunately my stolen moment was interrupted by the shrill of a cellphone. I groaned at the noise and Donny reached to silence it. Once it was quiet again I relaxed just for the noise to resurface again.

He groaned and rubbed his face before he answered the phone in an annoyed tone.

"What?"

The person on the other line talked causing him to sigh.

"Fine... I'm on my way back. Handle things till I get back."

He hung up the call and placed his phone on the desk beside him. He lifted my head and placed a kiss on my lips. A kiss of promise. He pulled back and placed his forehead against mine.

"I really wish I could stay here with you. But unfortunately tomorrow is the charity ball and they need me to sign a few things as the CEO. I probably won't be able to see you for the rest of the day but I will tomorrow."

He stood up and began to get dressed. I totally forgot that that ball was on my last day and all of us were invited. If I kill Chase today then he'll probably cancel the ball and all my problems would be solved but then the aftermath that will follow is unmatched because I don't plan to run away this time. Not from my friends, family and him.

I refuse to leave the one person who's made my collapsing world even the slightest bit better by just being himself.

"Go on ahead. I'll catch an uber back to the city."

He stopped looking for his shirt to look at me with confusion.

"You're not coming with?"

I shook my head no.

"I have to settle all that stuff with the inheritance"

He nodded understandingly and continue to get dressed. Once he found his shirt he kissed my on the lips. He kissed me like it was going to be the last time he ever saw me. He pulled back, placed another on my forehead and left the room.

I sighed and got up myself and headed to the shower. After showering I put on a navy blue pantsuit, which I was grateful for bringing, and matching stilettos. Then I tied my hair into a sleek back ponytail and packed my bag.

Once everything was packed I placed the suitcase at the door of my room and left the room. With newfound determination I walked out of the Inn and headed to Green Attorneys. After sitting in an office with another lawyer for several tedious hours, I finalised the inheritance process.

On my way out I just happened to run into Misha who was sporting a flashy scarf around her neck. As soon as we locked eyes I flashed my demon at her and she scrambled. I chuckled on my way out of the building and hailed a taxi.

Going back to the Inn I grabbed lunch at the diner across the street before I checked out and called an uber. It arrived sometime after I finished my lunch. Shooting daggers at Avia on my way out I got into the uber.

In the car I watched as the trees passed by. I never thought I'd come back here, this dreadful town with bittersweet memories. If I wanted I could burn it all to the ground. Watch it all turn to ash while they all scream in agony. But as much as I'd love to I don't have time.

Turning my mind off I shut my eyes and savoured the road ahead back to my safe haven. Hours later I awoke just a few blocks away from my house. I rubbed my eyes as I the driver stopped in my driveway.

I got out of the car and pulled my luggage out of the trunk and waited to the side while the driver reversed out of the driveway and drove off. Sighing and grabbing my luggage I walked towards my front door but was interrupted by someone calling my name.

I turned around to the sight of Chase running towards me. A shock wave of surprise and fear resonated through my chest. I totally forgot that I'm still very much in a relationship with him. He came to stop in front of me panting and holding his knees to catch his breath.

"Hey Lucy"

"Hi Chase... Did you run here?"

"Uh... Yeah, I did"

I giggled slightly at his silly behaviour. Chase always reminded me of a golden retriever. Always eager to please.

"Why?"

"Well I just wanted to- Damn you look gorgeous!"

I smiled and thanked him. Why is he so adorable?

"Anyway I just wanted to ask you to be my date to the charity ball."

Now this statement shocked me.

"I mean obviously we're supposed to go together since we're dating but I just wanted to officially ask you"

I stiffened. Staring at his excited face I didn't have it in me to break his heart. So I swallowed my guilt and smile.

"Sure"
