Chapter 35: Evelyn, Part 1
Mesmerized by the cascading rain pouring down the window, I sat at the kitchen table for at least thirty minutes without one significant passing thought. For the first time in weeks, my mind took a much-needed break. The gloom of the morning spread into the afternoon, and when the porch light flicked on it illuminated sparkling puddles scattered on the ground.
My need for coffee interrupted my meditative state, and when I returned with a cup, I nearly choked on the first sip. The rain had stopped, but not in the normal sense. The ripples and droplets of water gripped the window and lost their fluidity. I sprang to the window and tried to squint between droplets to see outside. The illusion of thick mist that rain often gave hadn't changed, but the drumming noise on the house and windows had ceased completely. I hurried to the door. It was difficult to move at first, but I opened it to see the rain frozen in mid-air.
