Chapter 61

The hostess sat us in front of a large window. Sun cascaded through the glass, warming my face and my spirits. I knew what I needed to get out of this meeting; now, I just had to gather the courage to make it happen and not let Davis lead.

We ordered and continued the small talk through the meal, but as Davis sat drinking mimosas, never having asked once why I hadn't had any wine or adult beverages, I put my big-girl panties on and asked the million-dollar question. The only one that mattered.

"My head wasn't in the right place. It had nothing to do with you." He patted my hand like that would suffice.
