Catherine didn’t feel at all settled by the knowledge that she was going to die. By all accounts, she figured she should have been dead already, but still, to have heard it from the caller of death herself—now it was written in ink.
It doesn’t matter, she reminded herself. Just as long as she didn’t die before she finished her task. The black forest loomed high above her once again. Only this time, the energy was less frightening and more worrisome. Catherine shivered as a tingling sensation migrated up her arms that resulted in a black hole in her stomach. Her chest felt as though it were about to shatter. One more loss was all it would take. Kathleen and Mary were gone forever. Bowen, Danny, and Bella were next. She silently repeated their names and then instantly regretted it. What if the banshee caught her words on the wind?
