After running around and meeting people, all students were finally assembled in the hall, and then Ethan and Mindy's little talk about reopening happened, and how Sophomore year was the best, right in the middle, in your Sophomore year, you've adjusted to the way of studying and are comfortable with people, you've made enough friends, and it stands in the middle ground, it is hard obviously, but eased by the fact, that nothing is strange anymore, someone could argue with you that you didn't exist and your only instinct would be to take out your notebook and pen!
In short, Sophomore is like the layer of tomatoes in a sandwich, some people like it, some don't but most just eat it, similarly, many people just get through high school, but you only get to live your high school life once, live it to the fullest, you should always be doing that anyway, though since some people waste away their high school years, it is important advice. The best days of your life could be your high school days, and even if nothing eventful or outstanding happens to you, you'll have memories to reminisce later, therefore, don't hesitate, if you want to try out for the play, "A Midsummer Night's Dream", or "The Taming Of The Shrew", do it, I swear to you Shakespeare would be thankful, the guy was a genius after all, he didn't write things so that they would be left on paper, or if you want to give a speech, don't worry about what other people will think, chances are they might forget and you might remember, and so, don't be the one to cause yourself inexcusable pain, don't leave regrets!
Leah didn't listen to one word they said, whenever they were together, Leah was jealous, she hated that even though they'd broken up, it seemed like Ethan had already found a companion, except for Mindy, he was hanging out with his teams, like old times, but when he was around Mindy, she felt a sharp pain, and got an uncomfortable feeling, an inexpressive one, she was worried, Mindy looked at Ethan like he were a lamb, and she, a wolf; there's no better analogy, she acted like she was in love, but because she was trying hard to hide whatever her real intention was, her smile, her flattery all seemed so forced, that at some point, Leah felt like puking, though a safe puke, not because of food, looking at them, they seemed like a mismatched pair of shoes, no matter what, it just didn't make sense to her.
But maybe Ethan was too good an actor, he hadn't called her, he didn't talk to her anymore, he wanted to hurt her, but like Mindy had said to him, "To really hurt her, just let her be and let me do my thing." He'd showed up at Mindy's house, a week after summer break started, and asked her to date him, she was taken by surprise, not just by surprise though, shock, she had always dissed the couple, but never had she thought that Ethan would recover so fast, and on top of that, asking her to date was basically pulling the trigger to the gun Mindy was holding against Leah, bam, straight in the heart! Cruel cutie, Mindy had thought to herself, she did not particularly like Ethan yet, but they both were with each other because of two things, Ethan, because he thought that he could make Leah regret how she had treated him, by this show he was putting on, and two, he wished, maybe, if somehow, he could truly forget her, this would be it, trying it out with other girls, after all not girls could be similar, there would be 'normal' girls, girls better than her. He had been in a slump all summer, but when he'd seen Leah in that clothing store, laughing on the phone, talking to someone, he was heartbroken, the girl was okay, it was just him who'd fallen in too deep, the fire that had been alit, accidentally, hand't died out, it was burning and now he had motivation, Leah was right in front of him, he could make sure, she was living in the same hell as he was, it was only fair, if the both of them were in pain.
Mindy's reasons for dating Ethan were simple, Ethan was the most popular boy in school, her status would automatically shoot up, and the thing that interested her even more was that she knew she could torture Leah with this. She'd never hated Leah so much in her life, Leah's getting the limelight for so long was too much, now it was her turn to show Leah who Mindy Allen really was.
Mindy wasn't a bad person, in fact, she was far from a bad person, it was not her fault that she wanted to be the centre of attention, she didn't have her dad with her all the time, her mom too was busy, and being an only child, she was always so alone, she could not eat with anyone, or share things with someone, and so she tried to make herself the best, but when she realised that Leah was better at things, at studies, at talking, she felt threatened, it was as if something that was very dear to her was at stake, the attention she didn't get at home was totally hers at school, but now there was someone in competition, she was worried that she'd become less attractive, therefore, it was a relief when Ethan offered to be her boyfriend out of nowhere, she didn't care whom she dated as long as the spotlight would be on her.
