Archery

From there on, I spent the rest of the day making arrows getting extra feathers from every parrot that stopped by, thankfully not having to take any away since they all seemed to have the same problem regarding feathers that had fallen off, staying stuck to them.

Of course, I had also gained a lot of the people's attention in the new settlement, since although they had used spears and thrown axes to kill animals before, they had, for a fact, never seen such a fast-moving projectile, especially one as powerful as the arrow.

The day eventually came to an end though, and as usual, I returned to the original settlement to wait for a new day to arrive; I was particularly excited for tomorrow because once I successfully taught everyone how to use bows, humans would finally become the dominant species of this area.

After all, the apex predator is usually the species that stand at the top, being able to hunt the rest with ease while rarely ever being overpowered by the other species in the wilderness, so being able to kill animals no matter how deadly without having even to risk one's own life fell under the qualification, the future was bright.

June 18th, 0001:

As soon as the day began and I woke up, I immediately got to work getting the bows and arrows I had made yesterday and putting them on an unused table from the dining area. Like yesterday, everyone came to where I was, and some came over to the box next to me where I stored the daggers, trying to get them to start practicing.

Seeing this, although I did really want to get to teaching them archery, I also knew that they did indeed need to practice their dagger-wielding skills if they were to improve, so today, I just let them do a short practice to remember everything they did right the day before. Afterward finally moving on to teaching them how to use a bow and arrow.

Basically, as I had done in the new settlement, I put an orange in between two tree branches trying to shoot id down using the arrows I had, and succeeding in my third try. Regardless I had achieved the result I wanted.

From what I was able to see, everyone that was watching was already amazed by the speed of the projectiles I was shooting as they were considerably faster than the spears they used to throw, and even more shocked when they saw that the arrow almost go entirely through the orange as soon as it hit.

Once everything was over, and most were able to compose themselves, I signaled one of the people who seemed eager to try the bow out to come over and passed him everything to help her get the arrow into position and steady the bow.

I was honestly no longer even considering that any of them might use the weapons I gave them to hurt anyone in the settlement, so I was comfortable letting them shot the arrows on their own if they were able to, the only reason I helped them position the bow at a certain target was just so that their shot would have a better chance at hitting.

I was, of course, no expert when it came to archery, but at the very least, I knew that having a shaking bow right before letting go of the arrow would probably not end well. Thankfully though, once they let go of the arrow, they seemed to have a pretty good eye as they almost hit the orange I had put back up on the tree on their first try.

From there, the rest of the day was dedicated to helping people get better at hitting either animal skin or fruit with an arrow, with some having a lot more success with others and Jose showing a sort of proficiency with the bow.

Time flew by, and eventually, it was once again lunchtime, and everyone gathered together to eat. Everything seemed to be a lot more lively. Even though we were very far behind technologically and socially from the present I used to know; I began to feel a sense of familiarity for some reason.

Perhaps it was simply because the area I lived in was very underdeveloped like most of my country, or perhaps it was just the atmosphere of very basic safety and joy. Before I could indulge myself too much in reminiscing though, we were interrupted by the familiar growl of a puma.

At first, I was slightly startled since I had thought that we had exterminated all predators directly bordering the settlement as we hadn't had an encounter in a long time. Regardless I grabbed the bow and arrow nearby me and got ready to shoot.

The Puma seemed to be currently held off by the wall that had been set up trying to find a way to jump it safely without hurting itself, giving me a perfect shot for its head; as I was aiming the shot, though, I saw an arrow fly and strike it right in the throat casing for the puma to release a loud cry.

It was only after I looked back to see who had shot the arrow that I noticed Josue, bow still in hand, looking at the puma in silence before he grabbed another arrow and shot it at what I had assumed would be slightly higher up its neck; this time though, his aim was a little off only hitting the nose.

He did still hit it though, and it seemed that the blood flowing out of the hole that had been created in its throat was beginning to reach dangerous levels, so from there, I just signaled for him to stop, as the puma was guaranteed to die regardless, and the pain would immobilize it even if we were to stand right next to it.

He seemed to understand why I had stopped him and resumed eating his meal; I was actually quite happy because Jose had just proved that there was no longer any need to engage in close combat with beasts purposefully after letting them learn how to use bows. It seemed that the system agreed with me as well, as its voice suddenly appeared once again.
