They Were Supposed to Be Beginner Monsters ch 5

The night was mostly uneventful. The noise of the woods slowly returned to what Justin remembered it as. Animal cries and scurrying sounds among the tree trunks and branches return as the night grows longer.

"Tomorrow we need to hunt something. If my knowledge of rpgs says one thing we need levels."

Midnight slides by and Justin finally awakens Keyla.

"Do you mind taking the next shift? We need to move out at first light"

She groans but nods in agreement.

He doesn't sleep much. Unrestful dreams of monsters and running people plague him as he tosses and turns. Finally the shaking of his shoulders as Keyla tries to wake him up comes.

"The sun is coming out Justin. You told me to wake you up when I saw the sun"

After some time and lots of grumbling they get their things packed up and saddled.

"You can ride Scout I'll walk."

"What? No way he is your horse."

"I will be fine. Ugh fine we can take turns" he finally concedes.

"I think we need to come up with a plan though. I Never did ask and I'm not even sure if it's proper etiquette but we are going to have to work together. What class are you? I tried analyzing your status but for some reason I'm not getting anything"

"Oh I picked mage. It was the only cool option."

"Hmmm did it come with any spells?"

"Only 2 and I haven't even had the chance to figure out how to cast them."

"So we have the bare minimum to make up the ideal Party" Justin says thoughtfully.

"What do you mean?"

"Well generally you have a damage dealer, a healer, a tank, and sometimes a rogue. We TECHNICALLY have 3 of those. Mages are usually high dmg but squishy. I'm a Paladin I can fill in the role of a tank, atleast I think I haven't really fought anything around my own level. I also have a healing spell. So there is our healer."

"Wait. How did you get the Paladin class? I didn't have that option. I saw Warrior but definitly not Paladin."

"Oh um...I got an Advanced Class right off the bat. Something about being really far from civilization gave me a bit of a one up with the System. Its actually where i got all this armor, my sword and shield."

"You have a shield? Why didn't you use it against the werewolf?!" she exclaims incredulously

He blushes and looks away.

"I just didn't think of it at the time. It all happened to fast. What about you? What do you get with your class?"

The two of them spend the next hour discussing their classes strenths and weaknesses. Interestingly, Justin finds out Keyla only gets +2 Int per level and only 2 stat points. He can't help but wonder at the difference and how lucky he got.

"Ok. We need to get past those werewolves, but we are too weak right now. We HAVE got to find a way to level up some more. I say we continue to move west parallel to the highway. For whatever reason the werewolves have made it their territory. I think we are going to have to hunt weaker monsters or animals."

"I guess..." Keyla nods reluctantly. "but how are we even going to find weaker monsters? I haven't seen anything weaker than those werewolves"

"I'm really not sure but there has got to be more monsters."

After deciding to move out they pack everything up and hide their campfire. They gather up and with Keyla back atop of Scout they head west. Fear of getting caught unawares causes them to move slowly. Hours later they are trotting through a particularly thick group of bushes when Justin stops the horse with a hand on the horse's reins.

"Do you hear that? Wait here if I shout then make a run for it." He reassures her as he slowly sneaks forward, trying his best not to make noises as he pushes through the bushes. After only a few moments he reaches the edge of the bushes. They end on the edge of a large clearing. In the middle of the clearing is a large mound of dirt and rock, forming a strange sort of cave opening. Outside of the cave opening sit two vaguely humanoid figures squatting over top what Justin could swear looks like some kind of dice game. The strange green creatures are jabbering at each other in high pitched loud squeals and snorts.

"What..."

[Level 5 Goblin Guard]

Waiting some a few minutes to see what they do, Justin heads back towards Keyla. When he arrives, she looks clearly relieved to see him.

"I think i found what we have been looking for!" he exclaims excitedly "There are goblins over there and as far as i can tell only 2 of them both level 5"

"Goblins?" She looks at him in confusion

"Yeah! In every game i've played Goblins are almost always beginner type monsters. They usually some of the easiest monsters to kill. We need levels, BADLY. Now we have two relatively low Monsters in our way and we can get some experience."

After some convincing and lots of promises that they will run if it gets too dangerous. Justin finally manages to get Keyla onboard with the idea. He ties up Scout to tree with his reins. He and Keyla slowly make their way back to the clearing. When they arrive they look over the Goblins, still playing their game of dice.

" Ok i'll go first. Once i have both of their attention you attack your spells. Got it?"

Keyla nods. Her eyes carrying obvious fear in them, but a measure of determination shines through as well.

Just counts under his breath and makes a sudden dash for the two Goblins. He almost makes it to them before they see him over their game. They both as one bolt up to their feet, and pick up daggers from the ground where they sat. Raising his shield, Justin slows as he gets closer. Both goblins look at each other, an uneasy moment as Justin slowly inches his way closer. As one they both lunge at him. The speed of the attack catches him by surprise and causes him to hesitate. Before he raises his shield to block the attack.

It costs him. He manages to block the attack of one but the other just ducks under his companion and buries his dagger into Justins thigh. Roaring in pain and anger Justin reflexively kicks out hitting the goblin square in the chest sending it stumbling back onto its back. Justin slams his shield into the other goblin. Just as he resets himself there is a flash of heat and a bright light that flashes past him and slams into the goblin he kicked.

"Fireball!" he hears Keyla scream from behind him and feels another wave of heat flash past him and land on the goblin once more. It screams and shrieks in pain. The other goblin stands in front of Justin snarling at him with strange, pointed teeth. It uses the distraction of its comrade to attempt a lunge at Justin. He manages to just barely block its attack. Swinging his sword in return he manages to open a deep wound across the goblin's chest. The goblin lets out an animal growl and swipes with its dagger again this time swinging low. Justin blocks it again a little more ready this time.

"I think I'm getting the hang of this shield." he thinks to himself just as the goblin throws its dagger at his face completely catching him off guard again. He manages to duck and lift his shield up enough to block the flying blade, but just as he is celebrating he feels a sharp pain on leg. Looking down he sees the goblin had used the opening to bodily lunge at him, and was now literally gnawing at his leg its pointed teeth digging deep into his already injured thigh.

Justin yelps in pain and smashes the pommel of his sword down on its face. It still doesn't let go so he continues to smash its face. Over and over again until finally it stops moving sliding down the ground its face completely crushed in. A scraping sound comes from Justin's right and he looks toward it to see the goblin previously laying on the ground burning was lunging at him. He wasn't going to make it. The dagger in its hands tilts up to swipe at his neck. Just as it gets within range another bolt of fire catches it in the side of the face, slamming it to the side as its attack just nicks Justins neck barely missing him. He slams sword down onto the now twice fallen goblin. Stabbing down onto its chest as hard as he could.

"Jesus Christ those were scary. So much for goblins being easy basic monsters"
