Chapter 19: The Escape

“Ouch!”

“Stop complaining and sit still.”

Zane sat on the one high-top stool that hadn’t been destroyed. Sera stood between his legs, wiping the blood from his face with a damp towel. Zane tried to focus on the pain instead of the intense desire to reach out and pull her into his arms.

“You’re not gentle at all,” he muttered with a sullen glare.

She returned his glare with fire of her own, not bothering to give him a response as she concentrated on the task at hand.

“You’re mad at me, aren’t you?” he asked.

She huffed, avoiding his eyes as she continued to clean him up.

“He started it.”

“And you finished it, didn’t you?”

Sera was beside herself over the fight. Now that it was over, the truth of the matter sunk in quite deep. At the time it was occurring, she’d been so focused on the present. But now that Lonny was gone, the depths of what happened began to fester.
