"Someone tried to get you. Most of the cops and Marshals were wounded. We needed to leave before they came back."
Miriam swallowed. "Hurt?"
"Yes."
"Should I have stayed somewhere else, last night?"
He glanced at her, then back at the road. "Where you stayed last night was my call and my fault."
"Will the press be in on this?"
He threw a glance her way. "Why?"
"Well, I don't want the negative publicity."
"How can you think of your business at a time like this?" Disbelief dripped of off his words.
"Because my, oh, never mind," she said, not continuing her thought. He might not understand her business got her through the tough times and now was one of those tough times. "Where are we going?"
"Montana."
"I don't think we'll get there tonight," she said.
Gus snorted. "We'll stop in a few hours. I have to call into the Bureau. They may want to bring you in."
Miriam nodded. "So, what's up your butt?"
Gus cleared his throat. "Some law enforcement officers may have died."
