The ringing phone startled Shadowman. He had been sitting in his office with his eyes closed and his feet propped on his desk. Pain shot down his arm as he reached to stop the noise. He shouldn't be at work. "Yeah?"
"It's Capano."
What now? "Yeah?"
"My boy's in the hospital. Not doing well."
"Maybe he should learn to play the game better."
"Game?"
"He shot me, or I should say had his driver shoot me. He killed my employee."
He cleared his throat. "I see I've let my son loose and he hasn't done well."
Shadowman snorted. "I'll say."
"Where's the Stokes woman?"
He looked at the ceiling. "Don't know. I tried to get to her, but some FBI guy escaped with her."
"Escaped? Where?"
"Wherever FBI guys go." He shouldn't have taken the last pain pill.
"I'm not going to honor the contract that Junior put out on her life."
"Doesn't matter. It's personal now."
"You're going to kill her?"
Shadowman nodded. "Yep, it's what I do best."
"You're nuts."
