Gus Is Lost

Bob looked surprised to see Gus on his doorstep.

"Come in. I'd offer you a beer, but it isn't even lunch time."

"I'll take one anyway," he said taking off his tie as he followed Bob through the one bedroom apartment to the kitchen.

"What's up?" Bob handed his friend the asked for beverage.

"I quit."

Bob paused while pulling a chair out at his Formica kitchen table. He resumed sitting down and motioned for Gus to join him. He declined.

"You quit? Just like that?"

He nodded, before took a long swig of the beer. He let the last of the liquid play on his tongue. He swallowed. Leaning against the counter, he told Bob the story.

"Not surprising, don't you think? This is government you're dealing with."

Gus indicated agreement. "But they just rehired me. What if Shapiro loses the election? I'd only be high profile for three weeks."

"She means that much to you?"

Gus paused a smile dancing on his lips. "Yeah, I guess she does."
