The Victim Who Survived

“Yes. They’ve been very helpful.”

A silence fell between them. As much as Jen didn’t want to bring Carolyn’s thoughts back to the night her roommate was killed, she didn’t see anyway around it.

“I have a picture I want you to look at.”

Pulling a packet of photos out of her briefcase, she glanced at Carolyn.

The woman bit her lip not looking thrilled. “Okay.”

She took the picture from Jen and squinted. Her head went to one side.

“Is it him?”

“Sort of.”

Jen swallowed. She’d hoped for a more positive identification. “How sort of.”

“It could be his brother, but I was pretty upset when I saw him.”

A chill went down Jen’s spine. Was she going after the wrong brother? Her phone rang before she could speak. Despite not recognizing the number, she answered.

“Where the hell are you?”

His voice sounded unsteady. Sean barely controlled his temper.

She stood and moved away from Carolyn. ‘I’m showing a picture of Bill Howe to Carolyn Holmes.”
