Chapter 69: Warnings

I knew the voice but I couldn’t place it right away. And before I could turn around, Rafe gripped my arm. He stood, putting his body in front of me so that I was hidden.

“Cara. What the hell are you doing here?”

Of course, Cara Pryce. The girl from King who, with her pastor father, had saved Tasmyn from my plan to let a little blood. The same girl I’d seen in June, tossing food and water down to Rafe in his hole.

I had to say, Cara had seen better days. She’d never been an especially pretty girl; nothing about her stood out. But now she was painfully bone-thin, and her hair had been hacked off at the chin. It was dirty. She wore torn jeans and a flannel shirt that was several sizes too big.

“I’m here to warn you.” She answered Rafe’s question, but the whole time, she never stopped looking around, over her shoulder and beyond us.
