As they walked out into the bright hot sunlight Noel held out her hand and said, 'Thank you very much for lunch. I'll expect to hear from you in the next day or so.'


Walter grasped her fingers. 'My pleasure. And if you stay overnight I'll organise a dinner you won't forget.'


A pleasant anticipation. 'I'd love to. See you soon then.' She looked back once as she walked away and found him still watching her. She waved and he returned it before going back into the restaurant.


Back in the office she dialled international assistance. The operator had Catherine Patton's number and at Noel's request put through the call saying that it was late in the evening and if it was a business number she would have more luck calling early in the morning Australian-time. Noel waited with jumping nerves. What if Catherine Patton recognised her name? The phone went unanswered. Noel thanked the operator again and put the phone down. She was sweating.
