Chapter 15: We know about your family

She seemed interested so he told her. 'The last thing he needed was to be hived off to strangers. So we made do.' She didn't ask how and after several minutes silence he asked, 'What happened to the chap that ran into your parents?'

She was subdued. 'He died as well.'

In relation to Elisabeth's comment about Dr Walker, Robert now said, 'I didn't expect she would.'

They were almost there.

'We're both orphans then.'

It was a queer thing to say. Elisabeth said, 'I've never thought myself an orphan.'

Robert noticed the slight emphasis. 'Who else were you thinking of?'

'No-one. I'd have thought there'd be an age requirement.'

By nine thirty they were waiting in the same small visitor's room for Russell, Robert calmly sitting, Elisabeth standing, fingers locked together behind.

When the door opened Robert stood and moved forward to greet Russell and direct him to another chair. He looked questioningly to Elisabeth as he did.
