Chapter 14: Assessing a hostile witness

Milne queried Stavros with a look. With the air of one who was doing something only because he could see no alternative he opened it up and stood back, to one side, where he could watch. Elisabeth stepped forward. There was not much cash in it. She slid the drawer in and out a couple of times thoughtfully. Milne watched her eyes measuring distances across the counter and surrounds. After several seconds she said, 'Where exactly was everything when you arrived that night, Mr Stavros?'

Christopher Stavros moved his heavy frame, compelling Elisabeth to vacate her spot. 'My father was lying here. On his back. With the knife in his chest.' He thumped a clenched fist to his breast.

Elisabeth was not intimidated. There was no need. She had two very competent males with her, one of whom was the police. 'And your mother?'

'She was waiting at the door.' Stavros shifted his body slightly but kept up the unblinking eye contact.

'What did you both do when you arrived?'
