Chapter 39: The voice of a Titan

It was a silent return journey but a not uncompanionable one. Their thoughts hovered around similar subjects, the variation resulting purely from point of view. To differing degrees they thought of Russell and his unshareable vigil. They thought of Thierry Richards - Elisabeth and Robert concerned with strategy, Elisabeth doggedly, Judy with recent revelations in mind. They hoped with fingers crossed that Mary Eleni would appear as summonsed; that, if there was a shield before Mrs Stavros, they could penetrate it; that there was a shield to penetrate; that at least one of the Stavros' would prove malleable.

The crossed fingers carried a large burden.

Detective Sergeant Phillip Milne was the next witness.

'The time difference, the money, the Stavros' behaviour,' Robert said, as though continuing an already begun conversation.

And as though she had been taking an active part Elisabeth replied, 'Yes.'

'Phil'll know what we're on about but he'll answer them as they come.'
