Chapter 42: A summary of discrepancies

Elisabeth took a step back. 'So, let's summarise what we have ascertained this afternoon. We have fifteen minutes, possibly longer, for which the only witness to the crime and her eldest son cannot account. We have some discrepancy over the locking of the doors. We also have the accused who, the Crown will attempt to prove, intended robbery and bodily harm, but who - inconsistently - allegedly panicked after completing these intended tasks. We have no evidence of the foiled robbery, except for a statement from the only witness - an hysterical witness - to the police. And finally we have a killer who the only witness' - the hysterical witness' - statement says is both calm and panic stricken - fleeing the scene, leaving behind damning evidence of his guilt. Would you say that's a fair account?'

His reply was slow to come and grudging. 'Yes.'
