Chapter 93: Nasty thing, blackmail

Milne knew he wouldn't find Lisa alone. A local lawyer had been retained - Philip Dellarue - and he found them all gathered. 'Phil.'

'Phil.'

They didn't shake hands, it wasn't that kind of acquaintanceship. Lisa's parents stood either side of her bedhead while her eyes strained to follow his every move. He stood at her feet to make it easy. 'Russell's been sentenced to twenty years.' Her parents ruffled, ready to spring. 'I can offer you immunity if you say what really happened. You can't hurt Greg.'

Dellarue stepped forward. 'Guaranteed?'

They'd been discussing it. 'Yeah.' He turned back to Lisa. 'Lisa, you were in the shop that night, weren't you?'

Her mother's arm haloed her head on the pillow. Her father held her hand. 'Yes.' It was a whisper.

'So was Greg.'

'Yes.' A breath.

With the experience of twenty-three years getting him to this point he asked, 'What happened?'
