Chapter 101: Avoiding each other

Tuesday she was up and at her desk early. Sleep was erratic still, the nightmares nightly visitors. It was as though she had never been away; the work routine, snatched conversations over coffee, unimportant chatter, briefings, client interviews, case discussions, all part of the norm - except the way she now felt about it. Robert rang to say he had overslept and was heading straight for court. Judy passed on that he might be back sometime during the day. He didn't appear.

On Wednesday he rang to say he had picked up what he needed the previous evening and didn't need to come in. He was avoiding her.

Elisabeth went to lunch late, it was almost two before she felt able to duck out, and ran into him on her way through the door into the foyer.
