Chapter 102: An appalling turn of events

There was a spell of several hours between the media getting sick of hearing, 'No comment,' and the afternoon calls made to meet that night's deadlines. Once begun they continued. The electronic media first for the evening news, the print media later for the next morning's papers.

Robert had rung just after eleven to see if they had heard but didn't return until late afternoon. He almost missed Elisabeth as she left to walk home. She was half way down the pavement when he saw her and called her name. Turning, she waited.

'Are you all right?'

'Yes.'

She seemed to be taking it in her stride. 'I would've come back but I couldn't get away.'

'There wasn't any need.'

Well, he'd known she wouldn't be looking for his shoulder to cry on. He felt awkward but said, because his concern for her overrode everything else, 'Can I give you a lift home?'
