Chapter 37

The bottom of the ocean

Sofya

I lay on the sea bed, staring out at the vast ocean, watching the various creatures swim about freely. I wondered what that was like, to be completely free. No obligations, no duties, no responsibility. Just free. I picked myself off the ground, stretching my back. I dug my hand into my pocket and looked at the map for the hundredth time. I was almost there, in about a day I would be. I bent down and picked up my pack, slinging it across my back. I looked ahead. Nothing in sight, yet. I started jogging at a steady pace.

Three hours later I stopped dead in my tracks as I saw a huge island blocking my way. Are you freaking kidding me? It was too long to go around so I would have to go through. I hiked up the mountain of sand, letting my shield go as I surfaced.

My jaw dropped as I gazed upon the beauty of the island. The sand was a pristine white, swirling shells dotted the beach as the waves rolled smoothly to shore. A lush rainforest loomed over me as I made my way to the edge of the trees. I took out one of my katanas to slash through the vines and entered the forest. It was dark but not yet dark enough that I needed to use my night vision. Out of the corner of my eye, I swear I saw something moving from tree to tree, following me, but I brushed it off. I was probably just being paranoid.

My thoughts drifted to Ash. He would have found out I had left by now. I seriously hoped he wouldn't come after me. I couldn't let him get hurt because of me, again. I sighed, I just wanted this nightmare to be over.

As I continued through the forest, my vision began to blur and my head was spinning. I blinked a few times, trying to clear my eyes. A huge dark figure popped out of the shadows, as I fought against the darkness creeping into my vision. Terror spiked my gut as I gazed at the beast before me.

It stood at least twenty feet tall, a mass of black fur, and slime dripping from its mouth that contained razor-sharp fangs. I raised my katanas, they wobbled in my hands as the creature approached, each step its speed increasing.

As it got to me I lashed out at it, stabbing my katanas at its chest. One slashed the creature's hide, spilling blood across me, the other got one of its eyes. The creature raised a clawed arm, swiping madly at me. The claws ripped through my clothes, goring my chest. It flung me into a tree. I hit the ground with a sickening thud. I tried to pick myself up, but it was no use, I couldn't stand.

The creature slowly approached me, knowing it had me. As the creature approached, I noticed other shadows dancing about, were there more? Just as the creature raised its long claws to end me. I spotted sky blue glowing eyes, and white feathery wings out of the corner of my eyes. A bright white light took over my vision. I imagined I must be dying, right? I wonder if aemons go to a good place when they die.

At least I tried, my death wouldn't be useless. Ash wouldn't have to worry about the consequences of being with me, they wouldn't have to worry about the damn prophecy because it wouldn't come true without me, and Alek wouldn't get me. So. maybe he would stop his ridiculous plan, but if he didn't I'm sure the others could kill him.

Lastly, no one would get the Tupismati stone since I was in the middle of god knows where. I couldn't help but think the world was better off without me, my death was probably for the best and I accepted that. My eyes fluttered open and I saw sky blue eyes before me. An angel?

"Lisi, the world would not be better off without you. I will make sure you live. I promise you that. I owe you that," A warm voice purred. I recognized the voice but I could not place it. I must have died.
