Chapter Seventeen: War Is Coming

When I felt like he was going to calm shut, he told me how to pray to him; in turn, I would be the only one that could get to him. My worship was his alone, and none of the other gods could have me afterward. He made it clear that he wanted me to think about it before I did it, so I did. While packing my suffers and him what very little he had, he waited for me downstairs with the others.

I was finally leaving this place; even if jack wasn't physically here, I felt her in spirit.

Making it outside and without another glance at the damaged house behind me, Lugh and I walked over to my car, popping our belonging into the trunk before climbing into the front.

Everyone else had piled up in silver-tongue car, driving off with us behind.

-

We had been driving for hours, avoiding highways even though they were our quickest bet of getting this entire freak road trip over with. For whatever reason, silver-tongue avoided them at all cost.

Lugh was passed out in the back seat with a hat over his face with his leg propped up over his other against the car door. "Lugh, what's gonna happen after this?" I gazed a the road in exasperation, still following behind Silver tongue as we passed out of Indiana into Illinois.

"He's goin' to start a war that'll blow up the whole fuckin' world. I also believe yer the reason it'll never happen." He said gravely, from the back seat, sitting up looking at me. I could feel his eyes on my face move and shift along my entire form before he laid back, putting the hat back on his face.

I watched as Wednesday turned off into the side street, getting out in front of an apartment building with fire escape stairs.

" here we go with more fuckery." I said as I parked my car and got out, knocking on the window to get Lugh's attention. A moment later, he got out of the back seat, stretching with a grunt before shaking his head.

I watched as a door opened, revealing a beautiful old lady, her hair silver with age and up in a bun. I found myself grabbing Lugh's hand tightly in mine, squeezing as we were invited into a place of the unknown.

"He's not be okay with you here." She said however she could manage in her imperfect English, her eyes flickering over all of us, pausing on me for a moment. I tilted my head a bit, slightly confused and wondering what was going through her head.

I walked in behind the others in silence, staying back behind everyone else, watching the reunion take place in front of me. I watched the interaction between silver-tongue as he handed out his so-called gifts. I got a sense that there was something more between him and the older woman, surprised that anyone genuinely enjoyed being around his slick mouth. I scratched my head fiercely for a moment, staring out the fire escape window, tuning the others out.

Lugh stayed next to me with his flask in hand, drinking in silence as he, too, was watching with caution.

I didn't like being here; I felt uncomfortable and the need to be on my guard, especially when I noticed the hammer on the fireplace, which looked like it was covered in blood.

That disturbing weapon took many lives, and I could feel it practically taste the death that surrounded it. I looked away with a grunt, moving slightly further into the wall or a far as it would let me.

"I don't feel right being here; I feel like if someone were to come at me the wrong way, that'd kill them." I hissed in Lugh's direction, watching his green-gold eyes flicker to me, then back at the others. "Czernobog. Feelin' uneasy aye lass?" He turned his body towards me, handing me the flask so that I could have a drink. I pushed it away, a frown plastered onto my lips.

"Interesting couple." The older woman's voice reached my ears, all of the others looking in our direction. Her lips were turned down a bit with age, but she looked at us in confusion as if she was trying to put something together. "Drunkard has a wife now?" She looked to Wednesday shrugging. "The strongest bond seen in centuries." She smiled as she looked at us, Wednesday leering at me in silence.

My lip lifted as I began to snarl, my eyes illuminating wildly before the glow faded to nothing. "Silver-tongue, I'll scoop out your other eye, and fucking eat it. " was my final warning, his eye flickering away. The woman next to him laughed, holding her side. "Strong words, strong woman. I like her." She snickered, lightly tapping Silver-tongues arm walking out of the kitchen. "I'll have dinner sort out, so please stay for supper." She said to everyone else before her, and her silver tongue disappeared from our view.

-

Lugh and I stayed in our corner from everyone else for the rest of the night until diner time, Shadow walking over to conversate. "I don't like this place; I don't feel right being here." His face was contorted into a worried expression as he looked around in silence, his eyes darting to the hammer on top of the fireplace.

I agreed but never said anything out loud, looking at the hammer as well. Lugh just chuckled humorlessly as he gazed at Shadow. "I tried warning ya before, yet never listened. Yer be lucky enough to escape tonight with your brains intact." His face hardened, and his eyes grew cold, just as a door opened, the grunting of a man being heard.

Silence fell for a moment before a rough voice could be heard. " That smell?" He growled out as he walked in and came into view with us all scattered around the living room.

When he saw Silver tongue and picked up a lamp, chucking it in his direction.
