“Now, everyone’s looking to me for what to do, and I have no idea,” she spilled out.

Harmon stared at her stoically for a moment before raising his cup in her direction.

“Did you need cream and sugar?” he asked calmly.

“What?!” Neivayka spat out confused. “No! I want to know what to do!”

“What makes you think I know any better than you?” Harmon countered.

“Be-because! You’re …” she waved a hand at him at a loss for words.

“Old?” he supplied with a laugh. “Age does not equate wisdom. Sometimes the wisest words are spoken by a child and the most ignorant spoken by an elder.”

His words rang a bell of truth deep inside her. She felt the wind rush out of her as she thought about what he was saying.

“Okay, but can you give me advice?” she requested.

“My advice? Forget about Avery’s sister. There are millions just like her, and you can’t save them all. Causalities are a part of the war,” Harmon advised with a steel edge to his voice.
