Chapter 91

Deprived of our sight, our ears strained to pick up the sounds of the creature crawling towards us. The metal duct cracked and groaned with its movements echoing closer and closer. I cradled my arm against my chest as we pressed ourselves back against the shelves hoping we were just out of sight as it pounded its way right to us. A bit of movement caught my eye. Nothing substantial, more like a sense of the darkness growing blacker than normal. In fact, it took me a second to realize that it was real and not just a trick of my imagination.

A dense shadow in the shape of a head slowly appeared over the opening and popped down into the room. We both pressed back even further hoping our position would hide us from those penetrating eyes.

Forever seemed to pass as the creature scanned the room then gave a tiny sound that sounded almost morose. It seemed disappointed that it had lost us.
