Chapter 46

Cross

I awake from the best night's sleep I've had in months to her snuggled beside me with her long, dark hair fanned out on the pillow and her arm draped across my chest. Her soft breath on my shoulder.

She is still the most beautiful thing I have ever laid eyes on, and for a moment, I think I'm dreaming.

I carefully slide out from under her.

I want to leave her sleeping peacefully. It's the cowardly thing to do, but I know, if I wait until she's fully awake, the moment will be unbearable.

Selfishly, I kiss her forehead and tuck the blankets around her.

I whisper, "Good-bye, Tesoro. You will always have my heart. Always," against her cheek.
