Chapter 79

Brie

I slam to a halt against Cross. I'm so relieved to hear Cassian's distressed cries that I don't even panic at the sight of his father holding him for the first time.

Cassian reaches for me, and Cross instantly relinquishes him.

I hold him close and start murmuring reassurances to him, "It's okay. Shh. BB's here. I've got you, baby."

I bounce him until I have mollified him into a quiet, hiccupping calm. I pace back and forth, softly rocking him, and he clings to me.

The relief I feel is great.

I say a silent prayer of thanks, and then I turn to Atelo. "Thank you. Thank you so much for finding him."

He nods to me and then points to the bag at his feet. "There is formula, diapers, wipes, and baby food in there," he informs me. "A lady at the store helped me. I am not sure if any of it is the right stuff or not. He didn't seem to care for the milk, but he finally drank some of it."
