Chapter 80

Cross

Vincenzo takes the seat across from me as Tony stands at his back. His stern gaze is concentrated on me as I lean back in my chair.

"Thank you for handling the cleanup with Matteo," I start.

"It was my pleasure," he earnestly answers.

"How was Papa?"

He shrugs. "He was upset to know his oldest friend had betrayed him. He feels guilty that he didn't see it and that it cost Emilio his life."

"It wasn't his fault."

"I told him this."

"I don't want him carrying that."

"This cannot be helped. He is your father, and as you will soon learn, as a father, you take the responsibility of protecting your family very seriously. Failure is hard to swallow. He will get there. He just needs time."

I lift my chin in agreement.

"What else is on your mind, Christoff?" he asks.

I blow out a breath and proceed. No use in tiptoeing around the subject.

"I'm sorry, Vincenzo, but I have to renege on our agreement."
