Chapter 4

He heard her curse for the first time, then reached into his pocket to get a lighter, she gave him a puzzled look.

"I never leave the house without one." He backed up and flicked it on, the flame was steady, she put out the end of the match in it till it caught fire and quickly lit the lamp.

"You smoke?"

He chuckled "Never picked up a cigarette since high school"

The fire illuminated her and significant portions of the store within the lamp's radar.

He flipped the lighter shut and replaced it. She set it aside to stop it from appearing to be a pathetic  date.

Sam returned with her cellphone in her mouth with a pile of sheets, she dumped them on the floor.

"Took me longer to find these."

She set up a makeshift cushion and sat back shuffling the cards while Keira got more lights, making sure the windows were air tight.

"Let's play"

They sat on the floor with their cards under their noses. With a lantern in the middle, hopefully they wouldn't spill their drinks.

It was quiet except for the snow falling and the whistling wind in the background, it was a little creepy like a western showdown except with cards and three pairs of vigilant eyes.

Sam laid back down when he won the first round, she gave her mug to him.

Keira looked into her cards, she had five 7s and the only one keeping her from tasting victory was a stupid 9.

He spread out ten 7s on the blankets.

"Goldfish"

Keira dumped her cards. "Nice going, take off your beanie"

He shook it off and nothing came out, holding up his hand "I'm taking the headband"

"These were two ninety nine" She murmured but with a smile poking at the corner of her lips. Taking it off, the reindeers nodded, he received it proudly, now he didn't have to speak to her without her looking utterly ridiculous.

They played again but Sam was asleep, wrapped up like a Christmas present.

Keira finally forfeited to avoid losing anymore of her stuff, she was getting cold and Sam was hogging the blankets.

He shuffled the cards with the prowess of a magician.

"Afraid to lose?"

"Yes" She said drily, laying down with her back to him.

With a groan, he settled down next to her.

She laid down tugging at the small portion of the blanket covering herself, she turned over to increase the fire on the lamp nearby, the light in the room intensified, she could spare a sleepless night with the lights on, max than freezing over like an ice pop.

He frowned at the lights poking at his eyelids and reached out to turn it down.

"It's cold" She said.

"It's bright"

His hand didn't leave the wick, she coughed.

"As you can see...or not, we don't have a fireplace and the heaters are_"

The store was bright again.

"...on" she continued with a stunned look.

He turned on his side and watched her move briskly to the light switch to flick them off, she crawled back into her blankets, glad to be out of the cold.

The heaters kickstarted altering the temperature, their bodies adapted to the change.

"That's better" She sighed

He turned down the lamp.

"What's your name?"
