Chapter 5: Gods and Goddesses

I thought some kind of stability would come. The situation is already strange from the very beginning, waking up in another world, being a servant of the hero, realizing this body I am having right now isn't the same body I had on earth. But never in my wildest imagination I would be kidnapped twice consecutively. Am I some kind of bad luck magnet?

The ceiling I see right now wasn't the same as when I went to sleep. It's a pure white ceiling, to be more precise there is only white nothingness all over the room. Is this even a room? I couldn't tell, it's easier to imagine this place as a cylindrical room with white walls but you couldn't really sense how far the wall actually is. To put it simply, it's nauseating.

There sits a single girl not far from where I am currently laying. She has a beautiful face, long black hair and wore a familiar looking school uniform. I recognize the girl, she is someone who I am close with.

"Can you please tell me who you are?"

"Dearest brother! Why do you speak with me that formally? Do you forget who I am?"

"Please stop, my little sister doesn't speak to me like that."

"Boooooo! Why do you have to be so boring?"

"I assume you are the god?"

"I am not the god, I am a goddess."

"Thought so, shouldn't we do this kind of thing before you send me to another world?"

"I forgot."

"How irresponsible. So are you going to give me the cheats now?"

"What do you mean cheats?"

"Power to slay the demon lord?"

"You already know there is no imminent danger to humanity right?"

"So why was I summoned?"

"For a game."

"Just for a game?"

"Do you want to be a god?"

"Huh?"

"I'll explain everything~ But couldn't you sit straight?"

"Sigh… alright."

"Immortality is a boring thing, you know? Few million years might be entertaining but longer than that most people feel like they have experienced everything, after that even the immortal gods wish to return to being a human."

"So is the game basically a god election game?"

"Yep, that's right~! Gods and Goddesses choose someone as their apostle, the winner of the game will become a new god while their backing god will rise in position."

"I see, that's an interesting proposal. How do I win?"

"Kill every other apostle."

"Huh?"

"Actually you don't even kill them as long as you are the one alive at the end."

"They all need to die..?"

"Yes, it's simple stuff right?"

"H-how many of them are all?"

"I don't know? Probably a lot."

"HOW CAN I KILL THAT MANY PEOPLE!?"

"As they say, kill one you are a murderer, kill a thousand and you are a hero. I mean you are going to war right? Just treat them as a victim of war."

"I CAN'T KILL A PERSON THAT EASILY!"

Am I angry? It feels weird, like I haven't been angry for so long. Even when I realized I was not on earth I didn't feel any sense of fear nor panic. But here? I can feel more emotions than usual.

"Did you do something to my mind?"

"Nothing at all!"

"Then how could I not feel anything in the other world!?"

"It's an ordinary failsafe for people who are transferred to other worlds, we can't have you going insane moments after the start of your new life right? There are people who can't handle the change so it has been normal to suppress some of you guys emotions, oh! As a bonus there won't be any mental attack to your mind as well, it's not fair if you are controlled as a puppet just after you transmigrated right? When you return, you probably won't have any side effects after you kill as well, it would be a shame if you give up just after the first kill~!"

"Is human life just a game for you guys?"

"Well… yes. Mortal souls can reincarnate as many times as needed. Compared to a God's life, a human life is only a couple decades at most, even longer lived species such as dragons could only live for a few thousand years at best."

This is disgusting. Just like everyone else, I don't think too much about the life I live, but I still think that every human life is important and worth experiencing. Is this what it means to be a god? To deny the meaning of human life?

"This is the adventure you have been dreaming of right? Do you think you can just live out your fantasy without any effort? How can that be called interesting~? Remember this, the adventure you are going to live out is also work as an entertainment for gods. If you really hate it, then be a god~!"

"You-"

"Whoops! Your time is up! It seems you need to wake up soon! Here's a thing you want, a gift from gods~!"

She waves her hands around creating a ball of lights converging on me.

"This is your first gift. To obtain more, just kill someone! The more gifts you have, the more people you need to kill so be careful okay?"

"We haven't finished talki-"

"Yes we have, see ya!"

In that instant, I could feel the strength leaving my body. Starting from my eyes, bodies, arms, legs then finally my whole body.

When I woke up, I was awakened by the crying sound of a girl.

"There's no way he's dead! We just talked for the first time yesterday! He promised me that he won't die!"

"Miss, we don't know what happened but we're sure he's already dead. He's just a homunculus, you can ask for a new one from church."

I slowly moved my hands, slowly, a bit by bit reaching for her arm. Her startled face is also cute as well.

She jumped and hugged me while crying at the same time.

This is definitely not a bad way to wake up.
