Exhausted and mentally drained, Jessie pulled into the driveway and cut the engine. She needed Zach, who was on medical disability, to hold her close after what she'd witnessed today. Struggling to accept her friend was gone, she pressed her hands against her stomach, trying to relieve the ache.
Taking in a deep breath, she released the air in a slow, steady stream and sat for a while before going inside. Maureen and Kevin were good friends. Jessie knew Zach would take the news hard, but he'd be much better at hiding his pain. She was thankful she didn't need to holster those emotions at home.
She hadn't called Zach during the day like she usually did, but with so much going on, there was no time. Her thoughts turned back to the day Zach had been shot during a hostage situation, and it caused her to shudder. It was a day she never wanted to witness again.
