Rushing inside the morgue, Jessie quickly strode to the opened doors of the elevator and pressed the down arrow, her heart hammering in her chest in anticipation of what the ME would tell her about Maureen's death. Samuel was walking by when the doors opened. "Samuel," she called out.
"Oh, good, you're here. Follow me," he said.
Covering her nose with her hands, Jessie held her breath walking through the autopsy room where two of Samuel's staff assistants were performing autopsies on steel tables. Based on the strong pungent smell, she knew the one assistant had just begun his autopsy. The release of gases was always stronger when the chest cavity was first opened. She acknowledged their presence with a nod and quickly hurried to the refrigerated area, stopping when Samuel did.
Seeing the stainless-steel wall with several drawers, was always a daunting sight, but today, she knew one of those drawers contained the body of her best friend and it caused her to shake. Samuel noticed.
