Jessie slipped out of bed, the weight of knowing her best friend would be laid to rest in a few hours left her gob smacked.
Funerals for her peers were always hard to deal with, but this one would be the hardest thing she'd done since joining the force. She prayed her emotions wouldn't get the best of her. Right now, Kevin needed strong people around him.
Since learning that Maureen had been killed, he'd been beside himself with mixed emotions. Angry and bitter because the job brought her life and their marriage to a screeching halt. Yet, he was relieved to know she hadn't taken her own life as had been suspected. A hard pill to swallow no matter how it happened.
This morning, as she prepared for Maureen's funeral, she thought of how many she'd attended since joining the force, and somehow had lost count, but none would be as final as this one.
