Jessie and Sorrentino walked up the marble steps and through the massive doors of The Louis J. Lefkowitz State Office Building, known as City Hall. They were there to question the mayor.
Showing their shields to the security guard, they each relinquished their firearm in his custody and continued through the checkpoint. While she waited for Sorrentino, Jessie wondered how the mayor was going to feel about being ambushed. She was confident he wouldn't take kindly to it.
Under normal circumstances, she would have scheduled an appointment, but given his history and friendship with the McCormicks, she wanted his initial responses unrehearsed and not prepared by counsel. Now that she knew the rumors about his infidelity were true, there was a strong possibility he'd construct some elaborate lie. Still, she knew if she listened carefully, he was bound to reveal some kernels of truth they didn't have before. At least, that was her hope.
