Chapter 191: THE SHORT END OF THE STICK?

Entering work the next morning, Jessie felt as though she'd just left the office. She no sooner walked in the door when Sergeant Williams announced the arrival of Alvarez.

"You have a visitor," she said.

"Ramone Alvarez?"

"Yes, ma'am."

"Put him in one of the interrogation rooms and get a hold of Detective Walker. I'll be there shortly."

Fifteen minutes passed before Jessie entered the room. Alvarez and Detective Walker stopped talking when she shut the door. The gloating expression on his face irritated her to the core, but she wasn't about to give him the satisfaction of knowing. She nodded for Walker to turn on the recorder. After reciting her spiel, she turned back to him, and the first words out of his mouth pissed her off.

"I told you I wasn't guilty," he said before she'd had a chance to say anything.

'Yes, you did, but just because you were released doesn't mean you didn't commit the crime. It just means the prosecutor didn't do his job very well."
