[ Author's note: From this chapter onwards whenever the author speaks to the main character it will be in the curved brackets '( )' and when the author speaks directly to the audience it will be in the square brackets '[ ]' ]
I had been walking in the direction the author said for a few hours when I started feeling hungry. I started looking around and saw a tree with some unfamiliar fruits.
'I wonder if these fruits are edible' I thought.
( Yes they are )
'Well isn't that convenient.'
( Plot convenience )
I went near the tree and picked a few fruits from some of the low branches. I put some in my bag which I had woken up with and ate the rest. The bag I realized could hold a lot more on the inside.
'How's this possible? This bag can hold a lot more than should be possible.'
( The bag is magical of course. Duh. It has an internal size increasing charm. This charm allows a container to have a lot more place in the interior than the exterior should allow.)
'Oh I see.'
I continued walking towards east till it was almost sunset. I was thinking that I might have to spend the night in the woods when I saw a huge wall.
'Wow' I thought. It was enormous, almost 30 meters[ approximately 100 feet] tall.
( The closest gate is on your right. You better hurry the gates close at sunset. )
I started running as fast as I could. I surprised myself at how fast I was running. I kept running for about 30 minutes until I reached the gate and was completely exhausted. I stopped before I was completely out of energy and started surveying the guards
I saw that the guards at the gate were checking ID. I thought 'Wait a minute. I don't have an ID.'
( You could try to sneak in using that carriage )
'Of course! Why didn't I realize that?' I thought. I sneaked near the carriage and crawled underneath it. It was easy since the carriage was moving slowly. I couldn't see anything from my hiding except for the underside of the carriage. When the carriage stopped I thought ' We must have reached the gate and the guards must be checking the ID of the driver.'
My guess must have been correct since after the carriage started moving I remember the sound of the gates closing.
I let go to the carriage and feel on the ground. I got up and looked around. I was in a street lined with shops. In one direction there was the closed gate.
I wandered around the city for the next few hours. The city seemed to mostly consist of inns, taverns and shops which sold things like food and clothes. 'The city must be on an important trade route' I guessed.( Well you're not wrong ).
I started getting tired and thought that maybe I should sleep in one of the alleys since I don't have any money. I looked around in the alleys to find one that was empty.
As I was looking around the alleys I saw in one of them a little girl being cornered by two dogs .( You should save her). I immediately ran in and stood in between the dogs and the girl.
"If you want her you'll have to go through me." I said in an unfamiliar language. I then realized that it was the first time that I had said anything in this world. I had only talked to the author before this but it was all through thoughts.
Before I had any more time to think about it one of the dogs attacked me. I didn't know what to so I just used one of my hands to hold it back and used the other to hit is hard as possible on the head.
It managed to hurt me using its claws. In return I grabbed its front leg and swing it towards a nearby wall. It hit the wall back first and a loud crunch told me that it had broken its spine.
Out of the corner of my eye I saw the other dog running away in fear. As I turned around to face the girl and ask her if she was ok I fainted. The last thing I saw was the girl running towards me.
I woke up. I was floating. There was nothing around me for as far as I could see.
'Where am I ?' I thought.
( You're in your subconscious buddy.)
'Huh? Why am I hear ?'
( I just wanted to congratulate you on your first time using magic.)
'Wait I used magic? How? When?...Oh! I get it. I used magic to increase my strength. That's why I was able to break that dog's spine. But I don't know how I did that.'
( Its probably for the best that you don't know right now. Now wake up.)
I woke up. I was lying on the ground. It was already morning. My arm was hurting badly. I got up and looked around. I was in the same alley. The body of the dog was still lying there. The little girl was sitting beside me.
I finally got a good look at her. She looked like she was around 10 years old which was the same as my body's age. She looked malnourished .She was looking at me with curiosity, fear and nervousness in her innocent eyes.
"Don't be afraid. I'm not gonna hurt you." I told her.
She looked less tense but still kept her distance.
I asked " What's your name?"
"Lily." She replied.
"Hello Lily. Nice to meet you. I'm Sam. Sam Castle."
I looked at my injured arm. It was bandaged.
"Did you bandage this?" I asked.
"Yes." She said.
"Thank you"
( Give her a fruit )
"Here take this." I said as I handed her a fruit from my bag."Its not much but....."
She took the fruit from my hand and devoured it almost instantly.
"Um Lily...where are we?"
"In an alley."
"Yes, but which kingdom? Which city?"
"You don't know?"
"Um....no?"
( Tell her you lost your memories. Quickly. )
"I..uh..lost my memories." I quickly said.
"Oh I'm sorry I didn't know. We're in the city of Relisto. It's a rest town for travelers wishing to go from the large cities in the central part of the continent to the island city of Monslam."
"Oh I see. Say do you know where can I get some water?"
"There is a public well in the Quester's Square."
I got up and started to leave. ( So you're just going to leave her behind? )"Aren't you coming." I asked.
"Can I?" she asked in an excited tone. It was clear that she had been alone for a long time and no one.
"Yes of course you can. You saved my life after all."
"You saved mine first."
"So we even. Let's go."
At that moment I knew that I now had a friend who was going to stay with me through all my adventures. How did I know this you may ask? Well I have read a lot of books and seen a lot of movies and TV shows. One starts to understand things like that when one does that. It's a classic cliche.
